South Korea has recorded one of the highest relative poverty rates among older adults of any country in the OECD for years running, with a large share of citizens over 65 living on incomes far below the national median even as the country built one of the most technologically advanced economies on the planet — a gap researchers link to a pension system introduced only in 1988, too late to protect a generation that had already spent its working life rebuilding a country from war.

The biggest unproven technology standing between Starship and Mars is not the rocket or the distance—it is large-scale orbital refuelling. Spacecraft have transferred conventional propellants in orbit since 1978, but no one has docked two giant spacecraft and moved hundreds of tonnes of supercold methane and oxygen between them, potentially over multiple tanker flights. After Starship’s 13th test flight in July 2026, SpaceX still had not attempted it.
