Tibetan people can live at altitudes above 4,000 metres where many humans struggle with thin air, and one of the genetic tricks that helps them do it did not arise in Tibetans alone: a 2014 Nature study found that a key high-altitude variant near EPAS1 was inherited from Denisovans, an extinct group of archaic humans who interbred with our ancestors.

Tibetans have lived for thousands of years on a plateau that averages above 3,500 metres, with many communities settled higher than 4,000, in air thin enough to leave most lowland visitors short of breath and prone to altitude sickness.

Researchers at the University of California Riverside found in May 2026 that living systems distribute their amino acids more evenly than non-living chemistry does — a statistical pattern subtle enough that it went unnoticed for decades and powerful enough to work on data already being collected by current space missions

A study published in May in Nature Astronomy proposes a way to separate biological chemistry from non-biological chemistry that does not depend on finding any particular molecule.

In 1944, Neal Miller harnessed hungry rats in a runway and watched them pull harder toward the food the closer they got — and harder away from the shock, with avoidance climbing steepest exactly where the reward sat, the gradient the British psychologist Jeffrey Gray later mapped to a septo-hippocampal brake

Neal Miller's 1940s rats showed that the urge to flee a goal rises faster than the urge to reach it as distance shrinks. A 2026 intracranial EEG study has now caught the same gradient inside the human hippocampus, amygdala, and prefrontal cortex — playing out in real time during a game of Pac-Man.

Two marsupial species once known to science only from fossils, and thought lost for more than 6,000 years, have been confirmed alive in the rainforests of New Guinea’s Vogelkop Peninsula — a discovery made possible by old museum specimens, rare field photographs, fossil fragments and the knowledge of Indigenous Tambrauw and Maybrat elders.

New Nature research suggests interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS may be a 12-billion-year-old relic from another planetary system, with carbon, nitrogen and hydrogen isotope ratios unlike those seen in Solar System comets — a chemical fingerprint from a world-forming environment that existed billions of years before the Sun.

An interstellar comet that passed through the Solar System last year did not come from here, and new measurements of what it is made of suggest it did not form anywhere recent either.
