Enceladus appears to have almost everything life should need — water, chemistry, hydrothermal energy and an ocean capable of lasting geological ages. If we search it thoroughly and find nothing alive, that failure may become one of astrobiology’s most important discoveries: evidence that habitability alone is not enough to make life happen.

Cassini established that Enceladus may be habitable, but a scientifically useful failure to find life would require repeated, complementary measurements designed to make a false negative unlikely.

Scientists estimate that even with 1,000 deep-sea vehicles each visually surveying about three square kilometres of seafloor per year—the current average rate—it would take more than 100,000 years to visually observe the entire deep seafloor once. So far, humans have directly seen less than 0.001% of it.

The 100,000-year estimate follows directly from 335.7 million square kilometres of deep seabed and a measured average visual-survey rate of 2.9 square kilometres per system per year.
