Life Signs is where Space Daily looks down instead of up. Animals, ecosystems, and Earth science, with a bias for peer-reviewed studies over press-release hype. The living world turns out to be at least as strange as anything in orbit.

Why does a funnel-web spider new to science turn up at just three sites in northern Idaho, about 500 kilometres east of the western Cascades and coast ranges where its genus was known to live?

Four collecting dates at three sites near Kooskia and in the Nez Perce National Forest produced a mygalomorph spider from a genus whose only previous revision was published in 1979, and whose two other species live a long way west. The genetics place it firmly. The map around it does not.

Early Earth

Every living eukaryote appears to descend from a single ancestral lineage in which an archaeal-related cell formed a permanent partnership with a bacterium that became the mitochondrion. It is the only successful origin of mitochondria known, although neither the merger’s precise mechanism nor the number of failed, vanished attempts can be established.

The bacterial ancestry of mitochondria is clear across living eukaryotes, but the surviving family tree cannot reconstruct the merger’s physical steps or count partnerships that left no descendants.

Exo Worlds

Scientists call them “belatedly habitable planets”: worlds that enter their star’s habitable zone only after formation. Around M dwarfs, some may first endure hundreds of millions of years of intense radiation that splits atmospheric water and drives its hydrogen into space, leaving them dry before temperate conditions finally arrive.

A planet can enter the habitable zone only after its young red dwarf has faded, but the same early radiation may already have stripped away the water needed to benefit from milder conditions.

Science

A black monkey with a pinkish-orange patch around its mouth was photographed in a Congo forest canopy in 2008, detected 114 times between 2018 and 2022, and only then named Colobus congoensis — by its describers’ count, the fifth African monkey species new to science in 75 years

Two communities had names for the animal before it had a Latin one. The paper describing Colobus congoensis rests on three confiscated bodies, two mitochondrial haplotypes and 114 detections, and it hedges harder than the announcement of it did.

Exo Worlds

After nearly 70 years of searching, humanity has found no confirmed evidence of extraterrestrial life—only potential biosignatures in a Martian rock, disputed chemistry 124 light-years away, and thousands of UAP reports that may have nothing to do with aliens at all. The answer, whatever it is, still arrives only in fragments.

Mars, K2-18 b and decades of UAP reports offer intriguing fragments, but each remains separated from confirmed extraterrestrial life by a different evidentiary gap.

Earth News

In 1978, Eleanor “Sandy” West and her family sold Georgia’s 26,000-acre Ossabaw Island to the state for half its appraised value while retaining the right to use the family home for the rest of her life; she lived on the island until 2016, died at 108 in 2021, and the preservation agreement still prohibits a bridge or causeway to the mainland.

Climate Science

The fossil record suggests extinction crises killing 10% of species occur roughly once per million years, while events killing around 65% occur roughly once per 100 million years — but these are episodic catastrophes, not a steady countdown toward the next mass extinction.

David Raup's fossil-record kill curve estimated average waiting times for extinction events of different magnitudes. Those intervals describe an uneven historical distribution, not a periodic schedule or forecast of when the next crisis will occur.

Climate Science

About 252 million years ago, Siberian volcanoes heated Earth’s oceans until much of marine life effectively suffocated — and scientists have now confirmed the same deadly combination of warming and oxygen loss is developing again today.

A 2026 PNAS study links end-Permian extinction patterns to temperature-dependent hypoxia, while modern observations show oceans are warming and losing oxygen. The mechanisms align, but the ancient catastrophe is not a direct forecast of present conditions.
