A few years ago, Saturn was listed with 83 moons. Then astronomers looked harder, began finding them dozens at a time, and by 2026 the tally had reached 285, so many that Saturn now has nearly three times as many confirmed moons as Jupiter. The planet did not suddenly sprout new moons. We simply got much better at seeing the ones that were already there.

It is worth being clear about that from the start, because the leaping number can give the wrong impression. This is a story about detection, not about Saturn changing.

How the number exploded

For a long time Saturn’s moon count crept up slowly, sitting in the dozens. By the early 2020s it stood at around 83, and Jupiter was the reigning champion of the solar system.

Then it changed in bursts. In May 2023, astronomers announced more than 60 new Saturnian moons at once, pushing the total past 145 and lifting Saturn ahead of Jupiter for the first time. In March 2025 came a far bigger haul: 128 moons announced in a single stroke, taking the count to 274. A further batch in March 2026 brought it to 285. The number did not drift upward so much as jump in great leaps whenever a new survey was processed.

Why looking harder found so many

The moons behind this surge are nothing like the great round worlds people picture. They are tiny, faint, often only a few kilometres across, tumbling in distant orbits far from the planet. They are extraordinarily hard to spot, which is exactly why they went unseen for so long.

Finding them takes big telescopes and a clever trick. Astronomers take many exposures of the region around Saturn, then shift each image slightly to follow the expected motion of a suspected moon and stack them together. A faint object that would be lost in the noise of any single frame builds up, exposure after exposure, until it stands out. That method, applied with instruments like the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, is what pulled a whole swarm of dim moons out of the dark. Their orbits are then tracked and the discoveries confirmed by the Minor Planet Center, the body that keeps the official tally.

What these moons actually are

Almost all of the new arrivals are what astronomers call irregular moons: small bodies on distant, tilted and often backward orbits, quite unlike the neat, circular paths of the major moons. They were most likely captured long ago rather than formed alongside the planet.

Tellingly, many of them cluster into families, groups of moons that share similar orbits. That pattern is the fingerprint of ancient collisions. A larger captured moon appears to have been shattered in the distant past, leaving behind a scattering of fragments that still travel together. Saturn’s remarkable haul of small moons is, in large part, the debris of those long-ago smash-ups. It is a real feature of the planet’s history, not just a quirk of counting.

What actually counts as a moon

Here is a piece of nuance the headline number hides. There is no official minimum size for a moon, so a lump of rock a few kilometres wide counts, one for one, the same as the giant moon Titan. Saturn’s total is a census of everything confirmed to orbit it, not a ranking of major worlds.

That is part of why the figure can balloon so dramatically. It also means the comparison between planets has to be read carefully. Saturn’s lead over Jupiter is genuine, but it partly reflects which planet has been surveyed most deeply and each planet’s particular history of collisions, rather than a deep truth about which is somehow richer in moons. Worth noting, too, is that these counted moons are separate from the countless icy chunks that make up Saturn’s rings, which are not included in the total.

Saturn versus Jupiter

Jupiter has not stood still either. Its own count has risen with fresh discoveries, reaching around 100 after its latest additions. But Saturn’s 285 now nearly triples that. For most of the space age Jupiter was assumed to be the moon king of the solar system, and in the space of a few years Saturn has taken the crown by a wide margin.

Both totals are still climbing, and the ordering reflects the state of the surveys as much as anything. If Jupiter’s neighbourhood were combed with the same deep techniques, its number would likely rise too.

What to watch

The count is not finished. Beyond the confirmed 285, there are reportedly hundreds of further candidate objects glimpsed near Saturn on single occasions, still waiting for enough observations to pin down their orbits and make them official. The number will almost certainly keep rising, at Saturn and at the other giant planets, as telescopes and techniques improve.

The more interesting science lies in those families of fragments, which record the collisions that have reshaped the outer solar system over billions of years. The tally itself is really a headline for something quieter and more useful: Saturn did not gain moons in the 2020s. We finally started to count them.
