In 1973, Buzz Aldrin published Return to Earth, and inside the memoir was a sentence that broke a quiet rule inside NASA: he named his depression. He described withdrawing into his apartment for days at a time, drinking heavily, watching his first marriage dissolve. He was the second human being to walk on the Moon, and he was writing, in plain English, that coming home had almost destroyed him. No astronaut in the Apollo corps had ever put that on the record before.

The book landed like a small scandal. The astronaut office culture Aldrin had trained inside prized what pilots called “the right stuff” — stoicism, competence, the refusal to complain. Psychological difficulty was not something you discussed. It was something you flew through.

The condition that did not have a name

What Aldrin was describing did not appear in any NASA medical file under a formal diagnosis. There was no clinical term in 1973 for what happens to a person after they have completed the single most photographed act in human history and then boarded a helicopter back to ordinary life. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the era listed depression and alcoholism as separate categories. It had no entry for the psychological collapse that follows peak achievement.

According to his memoir, Aldrin struggled with depression and alcoholism after returning from the Moon, describing periods of withdrawal and using alcohol to cope with his emotional state.

He was describing something specific. Not grief. Not burnout. Something closer to an identity vacuum — the sensation of having been built, trained, and launched for a single event that was now permanently in the past tense.

A pattern across the crews

Aldrin was not alone, and this is where the story gets stranger. Historian Andrew Chaikin, whose book A Man on the Moon remains the definitive oral history of the Apollo crews, documented a pattern that shows up when you line up all twelve moonwalkers. Almost every lunar module pilot — the astronaut who stood in the right-hand position during descent — came home changed in ways that unsettled their families and their colleagues. The commanders, by and large, did not.

Jim Irwin, lunar module pilot on Apollo 15, reported having a profound spiritual experience on the Moon and spent the rest of his life in evangelical ministry, including leading expeditions to Mount Ararat to search for Noah’s Ark. Charlie Duke, lunar module pilot on Apollo 16, underwent a religious conversion after his mission.

The commanders — Armstrong, Conrad, Shepard, Scott, Young, Cernan — largely returned to their old lives. Alan Shepard joked that before the Moon he was a rotten S.O.B., and afterward he was just an S.O.B. Neil Armstrong went quiet and stayed quiet until his death in 2012.

Why the seat mattered

The Astronomy magazine analysis proposes a mechanical explanation for the split. Commanders had more to do. During descent they were flying the vehicle, monitoring fuel, watching the surface for boulders. During the moonwalks they carried the operational weight of the mission. The lunar module pilots had time to look out the window.

It is a small distinction that produces an enormous psychological gap. One group was too busy for the experience to reach them. The other group had bandwidth left over — enough to register that they were standing on another world, that Earth was a blue marble the size of a thumbnail held at arm’s length, that everything they had ever known was 384,000 kilometres away and getting further with every orbit.

That surplus of attention appears to have opened a door that could not be closed on the ride home.

What the culture would not let them say

Early astronaut selection in the 1960s pulled almost exclusively from military test pilot ranks, with fighter pilots transitioning to space missions in a manner similar to military deployment. The selection criteria filtered for people who did not talk about interior states. Talking about interior states got you grounded.

This meant the Apollo astronauts came home to a professional culture where the only acceptable answer to “how are you” was “fine.” Aldrin’s memoir violated that norm. When he wrote about being hospitalised for depression, about the drinking, about the affairs, he was doing something no test pilot in the astronaut office had ever done in print. He was breaking rank.

The reaction inside NASA was cool. Aldrin’s public speaking career stalled for years. The word many colleagues used was uncomfortable.

The re-entry problem

Clinicians who now work with elite performers — Olympic athletes, combat veterans, expedition climbers, and yes, astronauts — describe a version of what Aldrin was describing. The pattern shows up whenever a person spends years training for a single peak event, executes it successfully, and then has to figure out what the rest of their life is for. The military language of “re-entry” is used loosely to describe returning veterans as well as returning astronauts.

There is no single accepted clinical label that captures the specific Apollo variant — the collapse of an identity that was constructed around an achievement so singular it can never be repeated. But the shape of it is now well-documented in performance psychology literature. When your entire self-concept has been organised around becoming the person who does the thing, the moment after you do the thing is dangerous.

Viktor Frankl, the Austrian psychiatrist who survived four Nazi camps, made a related observation in Man’s Search for Meaning. Frankl argued that humans can endure almost any suffering as long as they can find a reason for it, and that a life without meaning is what actually breaks people. The Apollo astronauts had a reason for everything they suffered during training. What they did not necessarily have was a reason for the years afterward.

Ego versus identity

The distinction that seems to separate the astronauts who recovered from the ones who did not is not intelligence, not fame, not money. It is closer to the difference between an identity built on what you did and an identity built on who you are when you are no longer doing it.

Alan Bean seems to have understood this instinctively. He gave himself a second act as a painter. Charlie Duke found a religious framework that let him relocate his identity away from the three days on the Moon. Ed Mitchell built an entire second career studying consciousness.

Aldrin, by his own account, had built his identity around being the first man on the Moon. When the first step went to Armstrong instead, and then when the mission ended and there was no follow-up, the scaffolding that had held him upright since West Point had nothing left to hold. He wrote later that the depression felt like being trapped inside the image of himself that everybody else could see.

Why this matters for Artemis

In April 2026, four astronauts flew around the Moon and back on Artemis II, the first crewed lunar voyage since Gene Cernan closed the hatch on Apollo 17 in December 1972. Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canada’s Jeremy Hansen spent about ten days in the Orion capsule, swung past the far side, and splashed down in the Pacific without landing. The Artemis program is fundamentally different in ambition from Apollo — a permanent base near the lunar south pole, a stepping stone to Mars, missions meant to last weeks rather than days.

No one has stepped onto the surface yet. Under NASA’s revised sequence, Artemis III is now a test flight in Earth orbit in 2027, and the first crewed landing at the lunar south pole falls to Artemis IV, currently targeted for 2028.

What that next crew will not have, at least not to the same degree, is the Apollo-era pressure to hide their psychological experience. Astronaut selection now includes extensive psychological screening and ongoing mental health support. The institutional culture around Apollo has been studied, criticised, and partly reformed. The current astronaut corps talks about counselling. They talk about their families. Some of them talk about it publicly.

Whether that will be enough to prevent what happened to Aldrin from happening again to somebody who steps out of a lander onto the lunar south pole in 2028 is another question. The specific psychological weight of being one of only a handful of humans to have stood on another world — that part is not something a support program can dissolve.

The engineering was the easier problem

The Apollo-era astronauts came home from a mission that had consumed roughly 4 percent of the entire federal budget at its peak — a level of national commitment that the Yahoo News feature notes is unthinkable today, when NASA typically receives less than 1 percent. They came home to a public that expected them to be gods.

The engineering that got them there was, in retrospect, the tractable problem. Trajectories can be calculated. Heat shields can be tested. Rendezvous can be practised in simulators. The Apollo Guidance Computer had less processing power than a modern pocket calculator, and it still worked, because the engineers understood exactly what they were building. That part of the story has been retold thousands of times, including in retrospectives on the fiftieth anniversary of Apollo 11.

What could not be simulated in advance was who the astronauts would be after they came home. Humans have lived aboard the International Space Station without a break since November 2000, and only now, from that unbroken run of long-duration data, is a real longitudinal picture emerging of what extended spaceflight does to the human mind. Aldrin’s memoir was the first data point in it.

The book that broke the rule

Return to Earth is still in print. It is not a comfortable book. Aldrin writes about a psychiatric hospitalisation at Wilford Hall Medical Center in 1971. He writes about the disintegration of his marriage. He writes about the drinking. He also writes about slowly finding his way back — a process that took decades and included several more marriages and several more collapses before he reached the sobriety he has now maintained, at age 96, for many years.

The condition he described did not have a name in 1973 because the culture that produced him would not permit the naming. The astronauts were, officially, fine. The mission was, officially, over. The parade was, officially, sufficient thanks.

What Aldrin put on the page instead was the fact that the ride down was harder than the ride up. That the Moon, once you have been there, does not go away. That an identity built entirely around a single event has to be rebuilt from scratch the moment the event ends, and that nobody at NASA in 1969 was going to hand you the blueprints for that.

When the Artemis II crew splashed down in the Pacific in the spring of 2026, more than fifty years after Apollo 17, they came home to something Aldrin did not have on his own return: his book, already on the shelf, its pages long since turned.
