Four consortiums presented bids Wednesday to the Portuguese government in response to an international tender for the development of a giant wind farm project, an economy ministry spokeswoman said.
Two of the bidders are led by Portuguese companies, power firm EDP-Energias de Portugal and energy group Galp Energia, with Italy’s Enel and Spain’s Iberdrola, the largest wind farm owner in the world, leading the other bids.
Candidates have until Wednesday to present their bids to the Portuguese government, which announced the tender in July for the project that will generate 1,500 megawatts of wind power.
It is one of Europe’s biggest tenders for wind power. The government is expected to announce a winner by the end of the year.
The government of Socialist Prime Minister Jose Socrates has made the development of renewable energy, especially wind power, a priority in order to reduce a high dependence on oil imports and cut greenhouse gas emissions.
