Picture a mound of clothing so large you can see it from orbit. Jeans, fleece jackets, cheap party dresses, some with the tags still on, piled across the driest desert on Earth.

This is real. It sits in northern Chile, in the Atacama near the cities of Iquique and Alto Hospicio, and it keeps growing.

What interests us is what happens to that pile next, because two very different futures are already playing out on the same ground. One future is fire and burial. The other is a small factory that takes the same discarded shirts and turns them into panels that keep houses warm and quiet. Comparing the two tells you a lot about how far a good idea can get, and where it runs out of road.

How the desert became a global dumping ground

Chile is Latin America’s largest importer of used clothing, most of it moving through the port of Iquique. Roughly 59,000 tons of secondhand and unsold clothing arrives every year from Europe, Asia and the United States. Some of it gets resold and worn across the region. A large share does not, and that share heads for the sand.

The scale is hard to picture. A Circle Economy case study on the company at the center of this story estimates that roughly 40,000 tons a year goes unsold and is dumped in landfills. It says more than 300 hectares of desert are now covered in textile waste. One dump site reportedly covers at least 741 acres, an area the report compares to about 300 soccer fields.

Franklin Zepeda, the engineer who later built a business out of this waste, put his first reaction plainly. He told National Geographic, “I was shocked to think that we were becoming the textile dump for developed countries.” 

Why burning and burying only makes it worse

The reason the pile keeps growing comes down to what the clothes are made of. Most are synthetic and chemically treated, so they break down slowly, and the local landfills won’t take them.

As Zepeda described it, “The problem is that the clothing is not biodegradable and has chemical products, so it is not accepted in the municipal landfills.” Left in the open, the same material can take up to 200 years to break down.

So it gets set alight. Fires move through the dumps from time to time, and the smoke is not harmless. Environmental lawyer Paulin Silva, who has taken Chilean authorities to court over the dumps, warned that “The material is highly flammable. The fires are toxic.”

Almost none of it is recovered. Reinalina Chavarri, who directs the Sustainability Observatory at the University of Chile’s School of Economics and Business, put the figure bluntly: “Much of it ends up in places like the desert. Only about 1% is recycled.” A country that imports tens of thousands of tons a year recycles roughly one part in a hundred.

The factory that treats the pile as raw material

Zepeda founded EcoFibra, based in Alto Hospicio near Iquique, on a simple idea: the waste is raw material, not just a mess. As he put it, “I wanted to stop being the problem and start being the solution.”

The process is unglamorous, which is part of why it works. According to the Circle Economy case study, the garments are first sorted by material, then stripped of zippers, buttons and other hardware. What’s left is shredded and pressed into a dense mat, which becomes an insulation panel that keeps buildings warm and blocks noise. Old clothing ends up inside walls.

The appeal is straightforward. Instead of paying to bury or burn synthetic waste that resists both, you turn it into something a building needs anyway. It closes a loop the current system leaves wide open, using material that is already sitting on the ground.

Where the panels go, and where the numbers break down

The panels are aimed mostly at low-cost social housing, where cheap, effective insulation genuinely matters and means warmer, quieter homes. On its own terms, it’s a clean idea that delivers something real.

EcoFibra processes close to eight tons per day on average, against the roughly 40,000 tons dumped every year. Even running flat out, a single small factory recovers only a modest slice of what arrives. This is one operation doing careful, worthwhile work against a tide that is set upstream, in shipping containers leaving Europe, Asia and the United States long before anything reaches the desert.

The wider picture sharpens that point. Chile is now the world’s fourth-largest importer of used textiles, and in 2022 it imported 131,000 tons of secondhand textiles, with around 70% ending up in landfills or dumps. Iván Franchi, an environmental engineering professor at Andrés Bello University, framed the stakes plainly: “No sustainable economic model can coexist with waste dumps visible from space.”

We don’t read that as a mark against EcoFibra. A factory that turns toxic, unwanted waste into insulated homes is exactly the kind of thing you want more of, and it clearly beats a fire in the sand.

But recycling at the tail end can only ever chase the problem. As long as the containers keep arriving faster than anyone can shred, sort or resell what’s inside them, the pile wins on volume. The place to fix this is upstream, in how much gets shipped in the first place.
