For adults aged 60 and older, the point where more walking stopped adding much extra protection against dying early sat at roughly 6,000 to 8,000 steps a day. Not ten thousand.
That figure comes from the largest pooled study of daily steps and death yet assembled, and it lands well short of the number most of us have been measuring ourselves against for decades.
We are not doctors, physiologists, or clinical researchers, and nothing here is medical advice. This is us reading through the research and thinking about what it does and doesn’t say. The studies we lean on are observational, which means they track patterns across large groups rather than proving cause and effect. A pattern across a whole population is never a prescription for any one person’s body or routine.
Where 10,000 came from, and why it was never a finding
The 10,000-step target feels like settled science. It isn’t.
It traces back to a marketing decision. In the mid-1960s, a Japanese company sold a pedometer whose name translated roughly to “10,000-step meter.” The round number stuck because it was catchy and easy to remember, not because anyone had studied it.
Harvard Medical School epidemiologist I-Min Lee has said this plainly. Speaking about the era the pedometer was developed, Lee said, “There were no actual studies that had looked at ‘10,000 steps.'” She has also described the figure’s appeal in blunt terms: “It was a made-up number in the sense that 10,000 sounds good, it’s easy to remember.”
A goal that started on the side of a product box became, over half a century, a health threshold people take seriously.
What the 2022 meta-analysis actually pooled
In 2022, a group called the Steps for Health Collaborative, led by University of Massachusetts Amherst physical activity epidemiologist Amanda Paluch, combined data from 15 international studies. The pooled sample covered nearly 50,000 people across four continents, tracked for early death.
The pattern was consistent. The researchers split people into four groups by daily steps, and death rates dropped as the counts climbed. Compared with the least active quarter, who averaged about 3,500 steps a day, the three more active groups had a 40 to 53 percent lower risk of dying during the study.
One detail worth keeping: walking speed didn’t add a clear benefit of its own once total steps were counted. The number of steps mattered more than the pace.
This is one meta-analysis. Large and careful, but still observational, which means it can show a strong link without proving the walking itself caused the lower death rates. People who walk more tend to differ in other ways too. The sensible read is strong evidence of a pattern, not the last word on cause.
The number that matters is lower, and it shifts with age
The benefit didn’t rise forever. It climbed steeply at first, then flattened out. As Paluch described it, “So, what we saw was this incremental reduction in risk as steps increase, until it levels off.”
The flattening point also moved with age. Paluch noted that “the leveling occurred at different step values for older versus younger adults.” For people 60 and older, the benefit flattened at around 6,000 to 8,000 steps a day. For those under 60, it flattened later, at roughly 8,000 to 10,000.
“Levelling off” is easy to mishear as a wall. It isn’t one. The big gains happen early, as someone moves from very little walking up toward those middle numbers, and then the curve gets shallow. Extra steps beyond that point weren’t shown to hurt. They just weren’t linked to much more of a drop in risk.
A more recent and larger review pointed the same way, finding that 7,000 steps a day is tied to meaningful health gains and may be a more realistic target than 10,000, with 10,000 still perfectly fine for people who are already active.
What this might mean for how you walk
We’re not clinicians, so take this as reading rather than instruction. But the shape of the evidence points somewhere encouraging. If the steepest drops in risk sit between a low baseline and the middle range, then the people with the most to gain are the ones doing the least right now, and that gain doesn’t require anything close to ten thousand steps.
Paluch made this point directly, keeping the hedge the science calls for: “there’s a lot of evidence suggesting that moving even a little more is beneficial, particularly for those who are doing very little activity.” That’s a gentler framing than one round target for everyone, and, as far as we can tell, a more accurate one.
