Electromagnetic Sciences, Inc. has won two major orders via Lockheed Martin Astronautics to supply several NASA science missions with up to eight CALTRAC Star Trackers, and X-Band Solid State Power Amplifiers.
Dr. Thomas E. Sharon, CEO of the Company, commented, “These orders represent important progress in our strategy to develop innovative products for space. We believe that the same strong base of optical and solid-state technologies that contributed to winning these NASA contracts could also have potential application in the various large-constellation commercial satellite programs that are being planned for the future.”
The Company’s CALTRAC Star Tracker allows ground control of a spacecraft that may be spinning as fast as 35 degrees per second, by combining the precise attitude determination of a traditional star-position sensor with unprecedented high-speed response. The CALTRAC Star Trackers ordered by Lockheed Martin will fly on NASA’s Mars 2001 Program, a multi-year series of spacecraft launches to follow-up the Mars Global Surveyor and Pathfinder missions. These instruments will also be used on NASA’s Genesis mission, which will send a spacecraft beyond the electromagnetic influence of Earth to collect pristine material from the solar wind and then return the samples to Earth for scientific analysis.
ELMG’s X-Band Solid State Power Amplifiers provide the critical power boost necessary for communications signals to propagate through space back to Earth. These amplifiers will be aboard the Mars 2001 spacecraft and the Space Infrared Telescope Facility, an orbiting deep-space observatory.
