The claim circulates in roughly this shape: skin ageing in East Asians begins about a decade later than in Caucasians, and the reason is structural, a thicker dermis packed with collagen that holds the skin firm long after it would otherwise start to give. It is the kind of tidy fact that survives well on the internet, partly because the first half is true. Its second half is where it gets away from the evidence.

We are writers, not dermatologists. What follows is a reading of the papers, not skincare advice.

That “decade” figure is real, and it has a single, identifiable origin. Most versions can be traced back to one comparison, and it is worth knowing what that work actually involved before repeating the number it produced.

What the study actually measured

It traces to Nouveau-Richard and colleagues, published in the Journal of Dermatological Science in 2005. They examined 160 Chinese women and 160 French women, age-matched across the 20 to 60 range, and scored by the same dermatologist. Reported lifelong sun exposure was similar between the two groups. In the Chinese women, facial wrinkles appeared on average about ten years later than in the French women, and in the same order in both: crow’s feet first, then the glabella, then around the mouth.

Two things about that study tend to fall away when the finding is quoted. It described itself as a pilot, with the small samples that implies. And it measured wrinkles, not ageing in general. Later work, including Tsukahara’s comparisons of Japanese and Caucasian women, pointed the same way, so this is not one isolated result. But it is a narrow, mostly female body of evidence built on modest numbers, and the popular claim inflates “wrinkle onset in a few hundred women” into a general law about two continents’ worth of skin.

Where the dermis comes in, and where melanin does more

That structural difference is genuine. Reviews of ethnic skin, including a widely cited overview in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology, describe East Asian skin as tending toward a thicker dermis with denser collagen than lightly pigmented Caucasian skin. That is not the whole mechanism, though, and arguably not the main one.

Melanin is the larger factor most reviews reach for. Darker, more pigmented skin carries a modest built-in sun protection factor, and because ultraviolet exposure drives most facial wrinkling, more melanin means slower photoageing. One consensus paper on Asian skin puts its effective protection meaningfully above that of fair skin, though the exact figures vary by source and are best read as rough estimates. Sequence is the point, and that delay looks more like a sun-protection effect than a collagen one, which flips the emphasis of the usual telling.

That “more collagen-producing cells” detail is worth handling carefully too. Reliably, the difference is more and denser collagen. The idea that Asian skin has extra fibroblasts is firmest in research on Black skin, and it migrates loosely onto Asian skin in secondhand retellings.

The part the claim leaves out

East Asian skin does not simply age later. It ages differently, and one difference runs the other way. That same 2005 study, which found delayed wrinkling, also turned up pigmented spots more prevalent in the Chinese group. Reviews since have made the same observation repeatedly: uneven tone, dark spots and mottled pigmentation show up as prominent, sometimes earlier, concerns in East Asian skin, even as fine lines hold off.

That edge is also temporary. Analyses of the Chinese and French data describe wrinkling in the Chinese group as rising slowly until around 40 to 50, then climbing steeply, so that by roughly 60 the two groups look similar on wrinkle scores.

Those ten years are a head start, not a standing exemption.

“Stays firm” is the least supported line

Firmness is where the popular account stands on the thinnest ground. Sagging does not track wrinkling neatly, and some work suggests East Asian faces may be more prone to it, not less, on account of soft-tissue volume and facial support more than skin quality. There is also the awkward possibility that some of the perceived youthfulness is not about skin at all. A much-cited paper in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery argues that many East Asian faces retain proportions the eye reads as young, wider and rounder shape, higher brows, fuller lips, independent of what the dermis is doing. If a face looks younger partly because of its structure, crediting the collagen alone misreads the cause.

What “East Asian skin” flattens

One more caution sits underneath all of this. Most research summarised as “Asian skin” comes from studies of Chinese and Japanese women, and “Asian” is a generalisation the field itself flags. A 2007 comparison of Japanese, Chinese and Thai women found meaningful variation in how wrinkling and sagging progressed across just those three groups. A finding drawn largely from women in two countries is a shaky foundation for a claim about a continent, or about men, who barely appear in the data.

So the durable version of the fact is narrower than the one in circulation. East Asian skin, in the populations actually studied, tends to wrinkle later, mostly because more melanin slows sun damage, with a thicker collagen-rich dermis assisting more than driving. In trade, pigmentation shows more, and the wrinkle gap closes with age.

The firm-forever dermis is the part to drop.
