Falling in love is not a metaphor for a feeling. For a while, it is closer to a diagnosis.

Brain imaging studies on people in the early weeks of romantic love show activation patterns that are hard to tell apart from those of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Serotonin drops into the same low range doctors see in OCD patients, dopamine floods the reward system the way it does with certain drugs, and the mind keeps replaying the same ten seconds of a conversation long after midnight. None of that is poetic exaggeration. It shows up on a scan.

One of the clearest versions of this finding came from a small 1999 study out of the University of Pisa. Researchers measured serotonin transporter activity in twenty people who had fallen in love within the previous six months, then compared the results to a group of diagnosed OCD patients and a group of healthy controls with no recent romance. The newly-in-love group and the OCD group came out statistically indistinguishable from each other, and both were significantly lower than the healthy controls, the researchers reported in Psychological Medicine. It is worth being precise about what that does and doesn’t mean. It doesn’t mean falling in love gives you OCD, or that OCD is secretly a kind of romance. It means one shared biological marker shows up in both states, for reasons still being worked out.

A chemical state with an expiration date

The state has a rough shelf life too. Most research on this kind of early-romance intensity puts the window at somewhere between twelve and eighteen months before the brain drifts back toward its baseline. That number tends to land badly on people. It sounds like a countdown to disappointment, evidence that the person who once felt like fate was actually just a very convincing hormone.

Here’s where it gets more interesting than the countdown implies. Twelve to eighteen months is roughly the same window some researchers point to for a different purpose, long enough to bond two people through the riskiest, most demanding stretch of raising an infant, and not much longer than that. Seen that way, the fade isn’t a betrayal. It is the mechanism finishing the one job it was built for. The uncomfortable part is what that leaves behind once the job is done.

What the chemistry alone can’t explain

If the neurochemical story were the whole story, love should behave like any other reward circuit, intense while active, gone once it stops firing. It mostly doesn’t work that way. A widow who visits a grave every week for forty years, long after any measurable chemistry has dissolved, isn’t running on leftover dopamine. Parents who adopt a child with no genetic stake in the outcome aren’t optimizing for anything a chemical model would recognize as a payoff. Grief that still catches in the throat on an ordinary afternoon, years after a funeral, doesn’t fit neatly into a twelve-to-eighteen-month window either.

If love were only a mechanism for keeping two people together long enough to raise a child, none of that later behavior should exist at all, and yet it plainly does, in almost everyone, in almost every culture.

Cooperation older than either of us

Biology offers a strange bit of company here, once you look past the neurochemistry of one species falling for another. A mother tree, dying, will send what’s left of her stored nutrients into the fungal network connecting her roots to the saplings growing nearby, and she never benefits from it herself. Coral and the algae living inside its tissue have kept each other alive for hundreds of millions of years, trading what neither can make alone. The mitochondria inside every one of your own cells were once independent organisms that joined another cell over a billion years ago and simply never left.

Calling any of that love would be a stretch a poem might make but biology wouldn’t. What it is, more carefully, is cooperation that outlasts any individual benefit, built into life at a level far below conscious feeling. It doesn’t prove that human love runs on the same force as moss and mitochondria. It does suggest that the impulse to bond, sustain, and give without an obvious payoff isn’t a fluke unique to people with the right serotonin levels. It runs deep in the natural world, well below the chemistry of any one particular attraction.

The part that never shows up on a scan

So which is it, a mechanism with a shelf life or something bigger than a scan can capture. Probably both, without much contradiction between them. The scan is accurate about the part it measures. The twelve to eighteen months of intoxication is real, finite, and it was never meant to be the whole relationship. It is the part that gets two people to the door.

What happens once you’re through that door, the tending, the choosing again on an ordinary evening when nothing about it feels chemical at all, has never shown up on anyone’s brain scan. That has never once stopped it from being real.
