Most people never once question whether time moves the way they think it does. A day has 24 hours, a week has seven days, a year loops back to the same date on the same calendar, and every person on the planet is assumed to be experiencing that same steady tick regardless of where they live or what language they speak. It feels less like a belief and more like a fact of nature, the kind of thing too obvious to bother examining.
Two very different bodies of research suggest that assumption doesn’t hold up nearly as well as it seems to. One comes from a small community deep in the Brazilian Amazon whose language never developed a word for “time” at all. The other comes from something far closer to home: what happens inside your own head every single night, once the lights go out and the ordinary rules quietly stop applying.
A people who never needed a word for “time”
The Amondawa are a subgroup of the Uru-Eu-Wau-Wau people, living in a remote stretch of northwestern Brazil, first contacted by outsiders only in 1986. Fewer than 100 members remain today. In 2011, a team of linguists and anthropologists led by Chris Sinha, then a professor at the University of Portsmouth, spent eight weeks living among them and documenting something that hadn’t been formally recorded in any human language before: a community with no linguistic concept of time as something separate from the events that fill it.
“There is at least one language and culture which does not have a concept of time as something that can be measured, counted, or talked about in the abstract,” Sinha explained when the findings were published. The Amondawa language has no words for week, month, or year. Speakers distinguish day from night and the rainy season from the dry one, and that’s the outer edge of their vocabulary for duration. Nobody has a numerical age. Instead, a person’s identity shifts with each stage of life. Children hand their own names down to a newborn sibling and take on a new one themselves, marking the change in status the way another culture might mark a birthday.
What eight weeks in the Amazon revealed about the rest of us
It would be easy to read that as a curiosity about one small, isolated group and move on. The more uncomfortable implication is the one Sinha’s team actually drew from it: a linguistic concept of time as an abstract, measurable thing, the kind you can save, waste, or run out of, is not hardwired into human cognition. It’s built, the same way a counting system or a calendar is built, and it’s entirely possible to live a full human life, raise children, mark loss, and pass down memory without ever needing to construct it.
That finding sat, for most people, as an interesting fact about a faraway culture. It’s worth asking what else about our own sense of time might be equally constructed rather than discovered, especially somewhere much closer than the Amazon.
The second place that same assumption quietly falls apart is one every person reading this has already visited thousands of times, usually without remembering most of the trip. A second place clock-time quietly stops applying: your own sleeping mind
Every night, the brain does something it never does while awake. The prefrontal cortex, the region responsible for linear reasoning and keeping track of sequence, quietly goes offline during dreaming sleep, while emotional centers like the amygdala stay fully active. One consequence is a mind that can move through a wedding, a childhood home, and a conversation with someone long dead in what feels like a continuous, ordinary stretch of time, without ever registering that any rule has been broken.
Neuroscientist Anil Seth, who studies the biological basis of conscious experience, has argued that this isn’t a special failure mode of dreaming so much as a more visible version of what the waking brain does constantly. “We’re all hallucinating all the time, including right now,” Seth said in a 2018 talk. “It’s just that when we agree about our hallucinations, we call that reality.” Waking perception, on his account, is a prediction the brain keeps checking against incoming sensory signal. Dreaming is the same predictive machinery with almost no outside signal left to check itself against, which is part of why time inside a dream can stretch, loop, or vanish entirely without ever feeling wrong from the inside.
Why the brain doesn’t need real time to build a convincing one
None of this means the sleeping brain is fully cut off from the clock on the wall. A 2021 study out of Northwestern University, published in the journal Current Biology, had trained lucid dreamers answer simple yes-or-no questions from researchers using eye movements and facial muscle signals, in real time, while still asleep and dreaming. The dreaming mind, in other words, can still track and respond to the outside world on a normal timeline when asked to. What it doesn’t do, left to its own devices, is bother building a story that respects that timeline at all. Given the choice, it stops tracking real time the moment nothing requires it.
Line up the two findings and a pattern appears that has nothing to do with geography. A culture on one side of the world gets along without ever inventing an abstract concept of time. A brain on the other side of the planet quietly stops enforcing that same concept every single night, the moment it falls asleep. Clock-time turns out to be less a fact about the universe and more a tool, one that a language can decline to build and a mind can set down the moment it isn’t needed.
Holding both truths at once
None of this is an argument that clocks are fake or that schedules don’t matter. Trains still need to leave on time, and a shared, agreed-upon measure of duration is part of what makes coordinated human life possible at all. What both the Amondawa and a night of ordinary dreaming point to is narrower and stranger than that: the specific, numbered, ticking version of time most people treat as an unquestionable backdrop to reality is one particular human invention among several workable ones, not the only shape a human life can take.
The next time a dream leaves you standing in three decades at once, or a week away from a clock-driven routine leaves the days blurring pleasantly into each other, it might be less a glitch and more a brief return to the older, more common way of simply living inside events rather than measuring them.
