Telenor Satellite Services announced Tuesday the commercial launch of Inmarsat aeronautical high-speed data service (Aero HSD). Based on Inmarsat’s Swift 64 technology, Telenor’s Aero HSD is available globally.
Telenor is the first and currently the only provider to offer Inmarsat Aero HSD service for a variety of commercial, business, and government aeronautical customers. For aircraft operators and passengers, Aero HSD delivers a cost-effective global extension of their corporate information technology systems.
The Telenor Aero HSD service uses Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) technology to provide reliable mobile satellite communications at speeds up to 64 kbps, permitting users to transfer large files such as proposals, presentations, and complex graphics and images. Users also can send large e-mail and fax messages, participate in videoconferences, and connect to their corporate LAN/WAN.
Telenor’s Aero HSD service allows customers to browse the Internet at speeds consistently higher than those allowed by conventional dial-up modems. Several avionics manufacturers are in the final stages of certifying the equipment to support this new service.
Since the new service is compatible with existing Inmarsat Aero H antennas, Aero HSD avionics will be made available for “stand alone” installation or for upgrades of existing Aero-H installations.
The service also supports secure communications over a wide range of secure terminals including STU-III, STU-IIB, KIV7, and STE. This feature makes it especially attractive to government and military customers needing reliable and secure data and voice communications for in-flight operations and crew use.
“Telenor’s new aeronautical high-speed data service offers the convenience of Internet connectivity and high-speed data communications for business, government and commercial aircraft passengers,” said Tore Hilde, general manager of Telenor Satellite Services. “Combined with Inmarsat’s satellites and our terrestrial network, this new service allows customers in the air to communicate as quickly and easily as if they were on the ground, providing them a virtual ‘Office in the Sky(SM)’.”
Aeronautical high-speed data service is the latest offering in Telenor’s portfolio of aeronautical communications solutions. Aero HSD is easy to use, and works with popular operating systems such as Microsoft Windows or Linux.
Customers using Telenor’s newest aeronautical offering will also receive the same high-quality service that has been a hallmark of Telenor for more than 25 years, including access to around-the-clock assistance from multilingual operators.
