INTELSAT has won a contract with China Telecom to provide Internet backbone services via an IntelSat bird at 177E. The five-year lease provides for an 8 Mbit/s link from China to the US, and a 45 Mbit/s return link.
Han Songlin, China Telecom’s Deputy Director General, stated, “We are pleased to be working with INTELSAT on this important Internet connection. We realize that satellites are an excellent and cost-effective vehicle for implementing the type of asymmetric links that Internet service requires, and we have been extremely pleased with the technical support provided by the INTELSAT staff and with the reliability which the INTELSAT system offers.”
Yao Gao, INTELSAT’s Regional Director for Asia, added, “Internet is our fastest growing service. We are pleased that our customers are beginning to recognize the advantages which the INTELSAT system can offer, particularly for Internet backbone connections from regions of the world which are unserved or underserved by cable facilities.”
