NSI Global Inc. and Applied Signal Technology, Inc. have announced a strategic partnership to incorporate Applied Signal’s DoubleTalk Bandwidth Enhancement technology into NSI’s FlexiDAMA product line.

The DoubleTalk technology, which was developed by Applied Signal’s Transcendent Technologies Business Unit, will enable users of NSI’s FlexWeb Point-to-Multipoint IP product to reduce satellite bandwidth requirements by up to 50%.

The advent of broadband IP services has escalated the importance of point-to-multipoint networks in today’s satellite communications arena.

Already a primary configuration for many traditional Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) networks, their growth is being spurred by the requirement to provide broadband IP connectivity to enterprise consumers. A significant barrier for this marketplace is cost to the customer, and a large portion of the cost of any satellite link is the recurring cost of the space segment bandwidth.

NSI Global has teamed with Applied Signal to overcome this barrier. The combination of FlexiDAMA and DoubleTalk together in one network offering enables customers to achieve intelligent network solutions utilizing DAMA and BOD capabilities with cost effective, yet highly flexible equipment, while at the same time truly minimizing the recurring space segment lease costs of the network over time.

“DoubleTalk is a perfect match for FlexiDAMA,” states Cos Modafferi, Vice-president of NSI Global and General Manager of its Broadband division.

“With the combination of FlexiDAMA’s efficient IP Bandwidth-on-Demand service and the bandwidth savings provided by DoubleTalk, we are able to offer our customers the most efficient IP network solution available today.

The resulting reduction of space segment lease charges goes directly to our customers’ bottom line.”

According to Stephen Ruddy, Transcendent Technologies’ Director of Marketing: “Applied Signal is pleased to be teaming with NSI. This is a strategic move for us. DoubleTalk is already proven in the point-to-point market. The incorporation of DoubleTalk into the FlexiDAMA product line moves us into the high-growth area of broadband IP networking.”

NSI offers broadband satellite networks using three VSAT terminals –VSAT Plus II, FlexiDAMA and SkyIP — that meet the requirements of a wide range of applications and services, including Internet access, enterprise networking, telephony trunking, and video-conferencing. NSI has more than 3,500 of its VSATs deployed with customers in over 50 countries around the world.
