For most of the last century, intuition sat outside the reach of serious science. It couldn’t be put in a lab, measured, or separated from luck, so researchers mostly left it alone.

That changed more recently than most people would guess. In 2016, a study out of the University of New South Wales did something that sounds almost too simple to matter: it measured intuition directly, under controlled conditions, and confirmed the effect was real rather than a trick of memory or coincidence.

What a “feeling” actually is, mechanically

The researcher behind that study, Joel Pearson, a psychology professor at the University of New South Wales, put the underlying idea simply: “It’s all about learning to use unconscious information in your brain.” The brain takes in far more than a person ever consciously registers: tone of voice, a flicker of expression, a posture held a beat too long, patterns from past experience the conscious mind has since forgotten. None of that data disappears. It gets processed anyway, and it shows up later as a physical sensation rather than a fully formed thought.

Pearson has described the scale of what’s happening beneath awareness with a simple image: “We have a vast amount of unconscious information in our brain. Think of our brains as like an iceberg. There’s just a tip sticking out of the water, and that’s what we’re conscious of at any one time. But there is this vast amount of information concealed underneath.” A gut feeling, in that framing, is the iceberg surfacing just enough to be felt as tightness, unease, or a pull toward or away from something, without necessarily explaining itself in words. The conscious mind gets a summary. The rest of the brain gets the full report, and only sends up a physical memo when it decides the summary isn’t good enough.

This matters because it reframes what a “hunch” actually is: evidence that arrived through a slower, older channel than language and got compressed into a sensation instead of a sentence, rather than some shortcut that bypasses evidence altogether. A parent who senses something is off with a child before any specific detail explains why is often reacting to a dozen small cues at once: a change in tone, a slightly delayed answer, a posture that doesn’t match the words. None of those cues individually would justify concern. Stacked together and processed faster than conscious attention can follow, they add up to a feeling first and an explanation second, if an explanation arrives at all.

That mechanism, unconscious pattern recognition arriving as physical sensation before it arrives as language, is exactly what a video below spends its time unpacking, and it’s worth sitting with the specific detail it opens with. The brain doesn’t wait for the world to arrive before deciding what it’s seeing. It predicts first, then adjusts only when reality contradicts the prediction hard enough to notice, which means most of what registers as “seeing clearly” is already a projection built from expectation. Your body, meanwhile, keeps collecting the raw data your mind quietly edited out.

Why the signal is quietest exactly when it matters most

Here’s the part that trips most people up: intuition is easiest to notice about situations with the least emotional weight attached. A stranger, a choice that hasn’t been made public yet, a decision that isn’t already wrapped up in hope or sunk cost. The moment real investment enters the picture, a partner, a job already accepted, a plan already announced, the brain has more motivation to protect the story it has already built, and it gets correspondingly better at muting anything that contradicts it. The signal doesn’t vanish. It just competes against a much louder incentive to keep believing what’s comfortable.

This is why “trust your gut” works better as advice for small, low-stakes moments than as a blanket rule for the biggest decisions in a life. The bigger the stakes, the more static there is to sort through, and the less anyone should assume their first sensation is automatically clean signal. A choice that’s already been announced publicly, or one a person has spent months hoping would work out, comes wrapped in extra motivated reasoning that a brand-new decision simply doesn’t carry yet. The feeling itself might be just as real in both cases. What’s changed is how much interference it has to travel through before it reaches conscious attention.

A rough way to tell the difference

One useful distinction: real intuition tends to respond to something actually in front of a person right now, a specific interaction, a specific choice on the table. Anxiety and wishful thinking tend to generate sensation out of imagined scenarios instead, replaying a fear or a hope rather than reacting to present information. Both can feel identical from the inside, a tightness in the chest, a pull to leave a room, a hard-to-place hesitation.

The practical test is source, not intensity: is this reacting to something real happening right now, or to a story being told internally about the past or the future. That question doesn’t resolve every hard call, but it’s a far better starting filter than simply asking how strongly something feels.

None of this makes intuition infallible, and no researcher studying it claims otherwise. It makes it something closer to a second, faster information channel that occasionally knows things before conscious reasoning catches up, and occasionally gets hijacked by the exact same fears reasoning would have caught. Learning to tell those two apart is the actual skill, not simply learning to feel more.

The practical version of this is less dramatic than it sounds. It doesn’t require meditation retreats or a total overhaul of how anyone makes decisions. It mostly requires pausing long enough, before a fast yes or a fast no, to ask what the sensation is actually responding to. A body that’s had years of practice ignoring its own signals doesn’t relearn that skill overnight, but the ones who get good at it tend to share one habit: they treat a strong feeling as a question worth investigating, not a verdict to act on immediately either way.
