There is an old warning parents give children who pull faces: keep doing that and it will stick. The instant version is a bluff. The slow version, spread across a lifetime, is close to how a face actually ages.
Dermatologists sort facial lines into two kinds. Dynamic wrinkles appear only while a muscle is contracting, when you smile or frown or squint, and fade when the face relaxes. Static wrinkles stay put whether the face is working or at rest. Much of what happens to a face over decades is the first kind turning into the second.
We read this literature rather than practise it, so what follows is a reading of the dermatology and the adjacent psychology, not clinical advice. The mechanism itself is not controversial.
What the dermatology actually describes
The lines tend to run perpendicular to the muscle underneath them. This is why forehead lines are horizontal, sitting across the vertical pull of the muscles that lift the brow, and why the creases at the outer eye radiate outward from repeated squinting. The perpendicular pattern is a long-standing observation in the dermatology literature, noted by Gerhard Lemperle among others around 2001.
The transition from dynamic to static is where repetition earns its reputation. A 2020 modelling study of forehead skin, published in the Journal of the Mechanical Behavior of Biomedical Materials, treated wrinkling as a mechanical process and matched its simulations against histological images of real forehead lines. In that account, frequent muscle contraction leaves the skin progressively less able to spring back, and age-related loss of volume deeper in the dermis does the rest. The line that used to vanish when you stopped frowning stays.
Expression is only one of the causes. Collagen and elastin decline with age, ultraviolet exposure and smoking speed the loss, and gravity, sleep position and inherited skin structure all play a part. What repetition supplies is location and direction: it decides where the lines will fall. Depth and timing are set by everything else.
The expression that counts is the one you default to
What shapes a face is not the dramatic expression but the ordinary one. A face does not record your happiest afternoon or your worst argument. It records frequency.
The muscle that gets used ten thousand times leaves a mark. The muscle used twice does not. So the face slowly biases toward whatever expression a person holds when nothing in particular is happening: the set of the mouth while reading, the pull between the brows during concentration, the squint of someone who spent years outdoors or years at a screen. These are not performances. They are the resting positions a life keeps returning to.
What emerges is a kind of honest arithmetic. A face ends up shaped less by what a person felt most intensely than by what they did with their features most often. The commuter who braced against traffic every morning and the editor who furrowed over manuscripts arrive at a similar vertical line between the brows by different routes.
The mood does not run the other way, or not simply
From the fact that expressions mark the face, it is tempting to reach for a bigger claim: that arranging the face can arrange the feeling. If you smile enough, the argument goes, you will become the kind of person a smiling face belongs to.
Research on this point is genuinely unsettled, and it is worth separating from the dermatology, which is not. The idea has a name, the facial feedback hypothesis, and a famous early result. In the original 1988 experiment, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Fritz Strack, Leonard Martin and Sabine Stepper had participants hold a pen between their teeth, forcing something like a smile, and found they rated cartoons as funnier than participants holding a pen with their lips.
Then a 17-lab replication reported in 2016, coordinated by Eric-Jan Wagenmakers and colleagues and published in Perspectives on Psychological Science, ran the same procedure across nearly 1,900 participants and did not reproduce the effect. The replicators were careful to say this did not bury the whole hypothesis, only that specific pen-in-mouth test. The current position among researchers who work on it is modest: facial feedback may be real, but the effect appears small, variable and sensitive to context.
These two claims sit at very different levels of confidence. That habitual expression carves the face over decades is settled description. That arranging the face changes the mood is a contested finding still under argument. Letting the first lend its credibility to the second is the easy mistake to make.
What a lined face does not tell you
The map is real but coarse. A deep line between the brows comes from years of concentration. It does not say whether the concentration was misery or absorption in work someone loved. Crow’s feet come from repeated crinkling of the outer eye, which happens in a genuine smile, and also in a squint against glare, and also in wincing. The muscle keeps no diary of motive.
Everything else makes character reading harder still. Two people with the same habits will age differently depending on sun, smoking, sleep and the skin they were born with. Someone who frowned rarely but sunbathed for forty years may end up more lined than a habitual frowner who stayed indoors. A face is a record of muscular repetition crossed with a dozen other variables, and the other variables are not visible in the lines.
This is the point at which the observation should be held loosely. It is a description of a mechanism, not a technique for reading strangers, and certainly not a verdict on anyone. Neuromodulators such as botulinum toxin work on exactly this mechanism, temporarily quieting the muscle so the overlying skin stops folding, which is a reasonable reminder that the whole business is muscular before it is moral.
What survives, once the overreach is stripped away, is smaller than the folk saying and more interesting. The face keeps the expression you reached for without thinking, on the ordinary days that made up most of a life.
