In 1921, Stanford psychologist Lewis Terman began a study that sounded almost utopian: find the smartest children in California, follow them for the rest of their lives, and prove that IQ was destiny. By 1928 he had assembled a cohort of 1,528 children — mostly white, mostly middle-class — and told them, their teachers, and their parents that they were the future of American genius. He referred to them as his gifted group. Everyone else called them the Termites.

A century later, the study is still running. The last surviving Termites are now well into their nineties. And the central finding, buried under a mountain of longitudinal data, is the one Terman himself never wanted to publish: a high childhood IQ predicted almost nothing about who would live a happy, productive, or meaningful adult life.

The man who wanted to prove intelligence was destiny

Terman was not a neutral observer. He was a eugenicist who believed in using intelligence testing to sort populations. Terman’s Stanford-Binet — the American adaptation of Alfred Binet’s original French diagnostic — became the template for the modern IQ test.

He believed IQ was fixed, heritable, and predictive. He believed the children at the top of the bell curve would grow into scientists, senators, novelists and inventors. He set out to document that inevitability.

The study began in earnest in 1921, with the main cohort selected by 1928. Teachers across California nominated their brightest pupils. Their average IQ was around 151. A handful scored above 170.

Then Terman waited.

What the Termites actually became

By middle age, the group had produced a respectable but unremarkable slice of the professional class. There were doctors, lawyers, engineers, professors, a few novelists, a smattering of scientists. Two future Nobel laureates — William Shockley and Luis Alvarez — had been tested as children and rejected from the study because their IQs were too low. Neither made the cut.

Meanwhile, plenty of the anointed Termites drifted into ordinary jobs. Some struggled with alcoholism, unemployment, and depression. As analysis of the data showed, a stratospheric childhood IQ turned out to be a poor forecaster of adult flourishing.

Terman lived until 1956. He watched his hypothesis fail in slow motion.

The traits that actually predicted success

When later researchers reanalyzed the Terman archive, a different picture emerged. IQ mattered up to a point. Beyond roughly 120, additional IQ points added almost nothing to life outcomes. What did predict success, resilience, and longevity was a cluster of personality traits that had nothing to do with raw cognitive horsepower.

The strongest predictor was conscientiousness — the tendency to plan, to follow through, to show up. Termites rated as prudent and dependable as children lived longer and reported more career satisfaction decades later. The impulsive ones, no matter how brilliant, tended to fare worse.

The second cluster involved persistence and motivation. Terman’s own team, reviewing the data in the 1940s, identified what they called the “A group” and the “C group” — the most and least successful men in the cohort, matched for IQ. The difference between them, they concluded, was not intellect. It was drive, emotional stability, and the willingness to keep going after failure.

The third was social integration. Children who formed strong friendships, maintained family ties, and later built stable marriages did better on nearly every measure — health, income, reported happiness — than their equally gifted but socially isolated peers.

Why the finding kept getting buried

Terman’s data quietly contradicted his ideology, and the contradiction was awkward enough that later gifted-education advocates spent decades either downplaying it or explaining it away. As a century of gifted research notes, the field kept returning to the same uncomfortable point: intellectual precocity is real, measurable, and by itself insufficient.

Follow-up work on separate cohorts has largely confirmed the pattern. Extraordinary cognitive ability does correlate with extraordinary accomplishment, but only when paired with sustained effort, opportunity, and what psychologists now call non-cognitive skills: grit, curiosity, emotional regulation, the capacity to tolerate boredom in service of a distant goal.

The Termites, for all their measured brilliance, were not uniformly built that way. Some were. Many weren’t. And the ones who weren’t tended to spend their adult lives being disappointed in themselves, having been told at age eight that they were destined for greatness.

The psychological weight of being labelled gifted

One of the strangest findings from the Terman archive is how the label itself shaped the children. Being told you are gifted at seven is not a neutral piece of information. It becomes an identity, and identities are load-bearing structures.

Termites who plateaued in adulthood — the C group — often described a specific kind of exhaustion. They had internalized the expectation of exceptional achievement and then discovered that intellectual talent, in the absence of drive or luck or opportunity, did not automatically produce exceptional outcomes. Contemporary reporting on the specific ache of growing up gifted echoes what Terman’s questionnaires captured in the 1940s and 1950s.

The pattern shows up in the study’s marriage data, its career-satisfaction ratings, and its self-reported measures of purpose. Children who developed strong self-concepts independent of their test scores tended to fare better than those who built their identities around being smart or intellectually superior.

What later cognitive science added

The Termite data predates most of modern neuroscience. Terman’s tools were paper questionnaires and correspondence by mail. He had no way of seeing what was actually happening inside his subjects’ skulls.

Later work has filled in some of the mechanism. The brain networks that support the traits Terman accidentally identified as predictive — persistence, mind-wandering, the capacity to work through problems slowly — are now partially mapped. The brain’s default mode network, discovered by accident in the 1990s, revealed the activity researchers kept seeing when subjects were supposedly doing nothing, and it burns nearly as much energy as focused attention. Much of the cognitive work that separates strong problem-solvers from weak ones happens when the conscious mind is doing something else entirely. Mind-wandering, self-talk, comfort with uncertainty — the everyday habits that get labeled “weird” in childhood — turn out to have measurable neural correlates.

None of this was available to Terman. He was working with correlation and correspondence, decade after decade, and the pattern still emerged.

The Nobel laureates he missed

The Shockley and Alvarez story is the one that gets told at every conference on gifted education, and for good reason. Both men were tested as children in California in the 1920s. Both fell just below Terman’s cutoff. Both went on to win the Nobel Prize in Physics — Shockley for the transistor, Alvarez for particle physics.

Neither had a Termite-level IQ. Both had something else. Shockley was famously obsessive, difficult, and relentless. Alvarez was curious to the point of restlessness, hopping between subfields, following whatever question interested him next. The traits that got them to Stockholm were not the ones Terman was measuring.

Meanwhile, the Termites themselves produced no Nobel laureates. Not one, out of 1,528 of the highest-scoring children in the state.

What the study means now

The Terman study has been running for a hundred years. It is one of the longest continuous longitudinal studies in the history of psychology, and its subjects are almost all gone. The final cohort is being closed out by researchers at Stanford who inherited the archive.

Its scientific legacy is not what Terman intended. He wanted to prove that intelligence was destiny and that the gifted were a natural aristocracy. What he produced instead was one of the most thorough refutations of that view ever assembled — a century of evidence that a high IQ is a starting condition, not a finishing line, and that the trajectory of a gifted child depends far more on personality, environment, and opportunity than on any number produced by a standardized test.

Terman’s own tests, meanwhile, went on to become the backbone of American educational sorting. The SAT is his intellectual descendant. The mandate to identify gifted or high-performing children through standardized scoring is still with us, still contested, still shaping who gets into which university and which neighborhood.

The Termites themselves, if you could ask them now, would mostly be in their late nineties. A few are still alive. They have spent their whole lives being an experiment, and the experiment’s conclusion is one their designer would have hated: the thing that made them special at age eight was not, in the end, the thing that made their lives.

Somewhere in a Stanford archive, boxes of questionnaires from 1928 sit alongside questionnaires from 2015. The handwriting changes. The paper yellows. The answer is the same in both: what you score is not what you become.
