The psychologist Claudia Hammond, in her book Time Warped, coined a term for one of the most reliable illusions in adult life: the holiday paradox. People whose weeks are varied and unpredictable tend to report that time feels slower in the moment but longer in retrospect. People whose weeks run on rails report the opposite — days that vanish without leaving a trace. The flat, on-rails sensation of adult life, in other words, is not really a story about being tired. It is a story about the brain being allowed to stop paying attention.

The technical name for what is happening is automaticity, and it is one of the oldest observations in experimental psychology. William James described the phenomenon in his Principles of Psychology. He noticed that the more often a sequence of actions is repeated in the same order, the less the higher brain seems to participate in running it.

Drive the same route to work for six months and the drive itself disappears. You arrive without memory of the middle.

The commute that isn’t there

Neurologists studying this effect have a name for the missing middle: it is called highway hypnosis in the driving literature, and the same mechanism shows up in kitchens, on staircases, on the walk from the parking lot to the office door. The behaviour runs. The narrator switches off.

What the narrator is doing during those minutes is roughly nothing an outside observer would notice, but inside the skull it matters enormously. The hippocampus is heavily biased toward novelty when forming memories. Repeated, predicted sensory input gets compressed, filed under the same tag as the last thousand times, and largely discarded.

The commute you took on Tuesday is not stored as a separate event from the commute you took on Monday. It is stored as another instance of “commute,” and the brain, sensibly, refuses to spend expensive tissue on redundant copies.

This is why a week of routine can feel, in retrospect, like a single long Wednesday.

What the scanners see

The neurological picture behind this has sharpened in the last decade.

Work on predictive processing — the idea that the brain is constantly forecasting the next moment and only flagging errors between forecast and reality — has produced imaging studies showing that predictable stimuli generate quieter cortical responses than unpredictable ones. A recent study on predictive distractor processing found that when the brain can anticipate what is coming next, it recruits proactive attentional mechanisms that essentially pre-suppress the response, freeing resources for other tasks.

Useful for survival. Terrible for the sensation of having lived through the afternoon.

Related work on contextual updating in the right temporoparietal junction has shown that this region — a hub for reorienting attention when something unexpected happens — stays comparatively idle when the environment matches its predictions. The reorienting circuits are, in a real sense, waiting for a surprise. Deliver none, and they stand down.

The subjective consequence is the peculiar smoothness of adult weeks. Nothing goes wrong. Nothing needs re-forecasting. The days run.

Why childhood summers felt so long

The same machinery explains one of the most reliable illusions in human life: that a summer at age nine felt longer than an entire calendar year at forty-five. It is not that children experience more seconds per day. It is that almost everything a child does is being encoded for the first time and stored in high resolution.

The first bicycle. The first funeral. The first time swimming out of your depth. The first geometry proof that clicks.

Each of these events triggers what neuroscientists call a novelty response — a burst of dopaminergic and noradrenergic activity that flags the moment as worth keeping. By the mid-thirties, most people have logged the first version of nearly every domestic experience they will ever have. The novelty response drops off. The high-resolution recordings stop being made.

Adults are not experiencing less. They are storing less.

The bilingual clue

One of the more interesting sideways confirmations comes from language research.

A recent study of oscillatory brain activity in monolingual and bilingual young adults found sharply different neural signatures when listening to familiar versus unfamiliar languages. The unfamiliar language pulled the brain into higher-frequency processing bands associated with active parsing. The familiar one settled into quieter, more automatic patterns.

The relevance to daily life is direct. Anything the brain has heard, seen, or done enough times slides into the automatic bands. Anything it hasn’t lights up the parser.

This is why a two-week trip to a country where you don’t speak the language often feels, in memory, longer than the six months of ordinary life that followed it. The parser was on the whole time.

The three-dimensional world you stop seeing

Even perception itself follows the pattern. The brain’s construction of depth and space runs largely without conscious involvement once a scene is familiar. Walk into your own kitchen and the geometry is solved before you notice you have walked in. Walk into a stranger’s kitchen and the same circuits work visibly harder.

The kitchen you know disappears. The kitchen you don’t remains vivid for years.

People who move house often report that the year of the move felt longer than the three years before it combined. This is not sentiment. It is the parser running full-time on a new spatial layout.

Why the job isn’t the problem

The common explanation for the flat feeling — that the job is grinding, that the responsibilities are heavy, that there isn’t time — turns out to fit poorly with how people actually experience time. The pattern holds across people with genuinely punishing schedules and people with almost none. What predicts the flatness is not workload. It is sameness.

A surgeon whose operating days each brought a different case reported vivid, textured weeks. An accountant whose Tuesdays were indistinguishable from her Thursdays reported the opposite, even when her hours were shorter.

The relevant variable is how much the brain has to update its model of what is happening. Update often and time thickens. Update rarely and it thins to nothing.

Some of this overlaps with what researchers have documented about burnout as a mismatch problem rather than a pure overload problem — the texture of the days matters more than the raw quantity of them.

The skills that become invisible

The same mechanism has a darker side in high-stakes domains. A recent piece in a police training publication on firearms training and automaticity pointed out that once a skill becomes automatic, it functions as a habit — and under stress, the habit is what fires, not the conscious plan. Whatever the officer has drilled the most is what happens, whether or not it is the right response for the situation.

The domestic version is milder but structurally identical. Whatever routine you have run the most is what runs, whether or not it is what you would choose if you were paying attention.

Adults who describe themselves as having drifted through a decade are usually describing exactly this: a stack of habits that fired reliably enough that nothing forced a conscious reappraisal.

What breaks the spell

The interventions that work are the ones that force the predictive machinery to fail.

Travel to unfamiliar places. Learn something with a real error signal — an instrument, a language, a physical skill that produces audible feedback when done wrong. Take a route you have never taken. Cook a cuisine whose ingredients you cannot yet name.

None of this is novel advice. What is new is the mechanism underneath it.

The point is not that novelty is virtuous or that routine is a moral failure. The point is that memory encoding is driven by prediction error, and a life engineered to minimise prediction error will, as a matter of neural bookkeeping, also minimise itself.

The retrospective compression

Research on retrospective time estimation has documented a related, one-directional error.

When people are asked to place various life events on a timeline, events from routine years are consistently pulled closer to the present than they actually were. Events from unusual years — the year of a move, an illness, a new job, a first child — are placed roughly correctly.

The routine years, in other words, don’t just feel short while they are happening. They shrink further in retrospect, as the brain finds no unique landmarks to hang them on and quietly deletes them from the timeline.

The forty-year-old who says the last five years have flown is not exaggerating. Those years are, in the physical sense of stored hippocampal traces, smaller than the five years before them.

What the diary studies and the scanner studies keep pointing toward is the same uncomfortable arithmetic. The days that require the least of the brain are the days it keeps the least of. Predictability is not neutral. It is the price of admission to a life that runs on its own — and the receipt is the missing middle of the week, the vanished summer, the decade that closed while nobody was watching.
