Ask almost any parent what screens are doing to their children’s brains and you will get the same answer. Rotting them. Shortening their attention. Making them worse at thinking.
A team of Finnish researchers set out to measure exactly that kind of harm. They followed hundreds of children for eight years, from primary school into their mid-teens, logging how they spent their time and then testing how well their minds worked. When the results came in, the screen numbers pointed the wrong way.
The study that waited eight years
The work comes out of something called the PANIC study, a long-running Finnish project on children’s physical activity and nutrition run by the Universities of Jyväskylä and Eastern Finland. Researchers there have been tracking a group of children since they were six to eight years old, measuring how they move, sit, eat and grow.
For this analysis, published this month in the journal Pediatric Exercise Science, the team followed 260 of those children, 124 girls and 136 boys, across eight years. By the end they were teenagers, average age just under 16. Movement and sitting were tracked with a wearable device that combined heart-rate and motion sensors, backed up by questionnaires. Then the teenagers sat a battery of computerized tests measuring learning, attention and working memory.
The starting assumption was the standard one. Research has long linked a sedentary lifestyle to worse school performance, and physical activity to a healthier brain. Screens are the biggest single reason children sit still. So more screen time should mean weaker minds. That was the expectation the data was supposed to confirm.
The result nobody ordered
Instead, the children who had piled up more screen time from childhood onward performed better on the cognitive tests as teenagers. Not worse. Better.
The study’s first author, doctoral researcher Petri Jalanko of the University of Jyväskylä, was open about the shock. He told Inc. that the link between more cumulative screen time and better cognitive performance was the most surprising thing his team found. His conclusion was not that parents should hand over the tablet and walk away, but that the blanket idea of screens as poison does not survive contact with the data. Screen time, he argued, should not be seen as purely harmful.
What might explain it
The researchers’ best guess is that the question “how many hours?” was always the wrong one. What matters is what fills those hours.
A child who spends an evening solving puzzles, building elaborate worlds in a game, editing videos or looking things up is doing something with their attention and memory. A child passively watching an autoplay feed is doing something quite different. The study could not fully separate those uses, but Jalanko’s advice points that way: parents and teachers should steer children toward screen use that involves active thinking, problem-solving, creativity and learning.
There is also a plainer possibility that the authors acknowledge. This is an observational study. It shows an association, not a cause. It may be that certain kinds of children, or certain kinds of households, produce both heavy screen use and strong test scores. The study cannot rule that out, and the researchers are calling for intervention studies, the kind where you change something and watch what happens, before anyone rewrites the parenting manuals.
The exercise findings were strange too
Screens were not the only surprise in the data. The physical activity results came out tangled as well.
In girls, more light activity over the years, the walking-around, pottering kind, was linked to better working memory in their teens. In boys, the picture bent the other way in places: some measures of higher activity lined up with weaker performance on certain tests. The effects differed by sex and by intensity in ways the team cannot yet explain, which is part of why they are cautious about all of it. Brains, it turns out, do not respond to childhood in the tidy ways public-health messaging would prefer.
What this does and does not mean
It does not mean screens are good for children. One associational study of 260 Finnish kids cannot carry that weight, and this one does not try. It sits alongside a much larger and genuinely mixed literature, some of it linking heavy screen use to sleep loss, low mood and reduced exercise, none of which this study contradicts.
What it does mean is that the simplest version of the fear, that hours on a screen mechanically grind down a child’s ability to think, did not show up in eight years of careful measurement. If anything, the arrow pointed the other way. Anyone confidently telling you that science has proven screens damage children’s cognition is ahead of the evidence.
The balance the researchers actually recommend
Jalanko’s own bottom line is unglamorous. Children still need to move, because inactivity among teenagers is a real public-health problem with well-documented costs. But the time they do spend on screens is not automatically wasted, and it can be spent well.
Somewhere between the panic and the shrug is the boring truth this study points to: a childhood with plenty of movement in it, and screen hours that make a young brain do something, may be exactly the combination that produced the teenagers who surprised everyone in Finland.
