In 1990, a third-grade teacher in Indiana named Joan Goble sent NASA a simple question: her class had heard about a “moon tree” nearby and wanted to know if it was real. The email landed on the desk of a planetary scientist at Goddard Space Flight Center named Dave Williams, and he had no idea what she was talking about. “I said I’ve never heard of these at all!” he later admitted, and he asked around the whole center, tracking down old-timers who had worked the Apollo program, and every single one of them came up blank.
What Joan Goble’s students had stumbled onto was real, just badly documented. In 1971, Apollo 14 astronaut Stuart Roosa carried roughly 500 tree seeds around the Moon in his personal kit, they were germinated back on Earth and planted in schoolyards, state capitols, and parks across the country, and then almost nobody kept a proper list of where they went. Three decades later, a curious NASA scientist would end up doing, tree by tree, the record-keeping that never happened the first time.
The astronaut who used to fight forest fires
Roosa is an unusual name to find at the center of a story about trees, until you learn what he did before he became an astronaut. In the early 1950s, years before he joined NASA’s astronaut corps or flew fighter jets for the Air Force, he worked as a smokejumper for the U.S. Forest Service, parachuting into wildfires in the Pacific Northwest and California. When NASA assigned him to Apollo 14 as command module pilot, the astronaut who would orbit the Moon alone while Alan Shepard and Edgar Mitchell walked its surface, the Forest Service’s own chief, Ed Cliff, reached out because of that shared history.
A Forest Service geneticist named Stan Krugman put together the actual cargo: seeds from five species, loblolly pine, sycamore, sweetgum, redwood, and Douglas fir, sorted, classified, and sealed inside a small metal canister that rode along in Roosa’s personal kit. On February 5, 1971, Roosa carried them into lunar orbit and back while his crewmates were down on the surface collecting rock samples. It’s a strange kind of parallel mission: two men making history on the ground, and their pilot quietly flying a few hundred pine and sycamore seeds around a world that had never grown a tree in its life.
A near miss in the decontamination chamber
The seeds nearly didn’t survive the trip home. Once the canister reached the quarantine and decontamination facility in Houston, the bag holding the seeds burst open, scattering them loose inside the chamber and exposing them directly to vacuum. For a while, nobody at the Forest Service knew whether any of them would still be viable. Even NASA’s own retrospectives don’t fully agree on the exact number of seeds in play to begin with, some cite roughly 500, the figure that stuck in the popular telling and the one in this headline, while others describe Krugman working with closer to a couple thousand before culling and sorting.
The uncertainty didn’t last. Forest Service nurseries in Mississippi and California germinated the seeds anyway, and nearly all of them sprouted normally, indistinguishable from any ordinary loblolly pine or sweetgum grown from seeds that had never left the ground floor of a Houston lab, let alone the Moon. By the mid-1970s, several hundred seedlings were ready to leave the nurseries.
Planted everywhere, tracked by no one
The seedlings went out mostly in 1975 and 1976, timed to the country’s bicentennial, and they went almost everywhere: state capitol grounds, university quads, national landmarks, schoolyards, a handful of spots overseas. A Moon Tree grows outside the White House. Another stands at Washington Square in Philadelphia, a few blocks from Independence Hall, and dozens more are scattered from Mississippi to Oregon.
What never happened was a central list. States and towns planted their sycamores and pines with a small dedication plaque, sometimes a local ceremony, and then moved on, and NASA itself kept no master record of the addresses. Decades passed. Plaques got lost to weather, replaced fences, and staff turnover, until in a lot of towns the Moon Tree was just a tree, tall and ordinary, its actual history quietly forgotten by everyone except maybe one longtime groundskeeper.
The teacher’s email that started a search
That’s the gap Joan Goble’s third graders accidentally poked at in 1990, and the one Dave Williams decided to close. “If you happen to know of a moon tree near you, because there were no records kept of where they were planted, send me an email and let me know.” That’s the line he added to the bottom of a small NASA webpage laying out everything he’d learned about the program. “And I started getting emails!”
They kept coming, one tip at a time, for years. A park ranger confirming a tree in a state forest. A university archivist finding an old newspaper clipping about a campus planting. A homeowner realizing the big sycamore in the yard next door had a small brass plaque half-buried in ivy. Williams’ registry, built entirely out of that slow trickle of public memory, had confirmed more than 80 surviving Moon Trees as of 2019, and by his own account he’s still adding to it as new tips arrive.
Stuart Roosa died in 1994, but the hunt for what he carried has outlived him in a way that feels almost fitting for a former smokejumper, someone whose whole job used to be finding what was hidden in a landscape before it got away from him. His son, Jack Roosa, has spent years attending Moon Tree dedications and tracking down his father’s seedlings himself, and he still describes the day of the Apollo 14 launch as a memory he’s never shaken: “I’d never felt something that powerful in my life, nor since.”
The next generation, already growing, this time with a list
The story didn’t stop with Apollo. In 2022, NASA flew more than 2,000 tree seeds and seedlings around the Moon aboard the uncrewed Artemis I mission, and this time NASA kept the list: those seedlings have since taken root at more than 236 documented locations across the country, with universities, schools, and museums building lesson plans and Moon Tree clubs around them. It’s the same program, essentially, run twice, fifty years apart, and the second time around somebody finally remembered to write down the addresses.
What actually stays with me about this whole story isn’t the seeds, or even the Moon. It’s the fifty-some year gap in the middle, all those decades where an entire, quietly extraordinary fact sat in plain sight in front of thousands of people, forgotten by the very institution that made it happen, until one teacher’s question and one scientist’s curiosity started stitching the record back together, tree by tree, email by email.
