Far fewer people applied to become NASA astronauts in 2024 than during the record-setting recruitment of 2016. That’s the number I keep circling back to, and it’s not the one that made the headlines.

When NASA introduced its 2025 astronaut candidate class on September 22 at Johnson Space Center in Houston, almost every outlet led with the same fact. The group of 10 was six women and four men, making it the first class in the agency’s history in which women outnumbered men. That’s a real milestone, and worth marking. But gender balance in a class of 10 turns on a handful of individual picks.

The other number sitting in the announcement was the size of the applicant pool.

The number that actually moved

Those 10 candidates were chosen from more than 8,000 applicants, submitted during a window that closed on April 16, 2024. Acting Administrator Sean Duffy framed it warmly: “More than 8,000 people applied – scientists, pilots, engineers, dreamers from every corner of this nation.”

Eight thousand is a lot of people but it is also down from the previous recruitment cycle. NASA chose its 2021 class from more than 12,000 applicants, and the 2017 class came from a record 18,300 applications. 

You could read that as a story about a fading national dream. I don’t think that’s quite right, and the history of the number is why.

The 2017 spike was the anomaly

The 18,300 figure was never a stable baseline. It was almost three times the more than 6,300 applications received in 2012, and it demolished the previous record.

Before 2016, the most applications NASA had received was 8,000 in 1978, when the agency selected 35 astronauts while staffing up for the space shuttle. That class was also NASA’s first to include women and minority astronauts.

So the 2024 total is not a historic low. It is roughly equal to the record that stood for nearly four decades, and well above the 2,500 to 3,500 applications NASA said it typically received before the recent surges. Read against the longer record, 2024 looks less like a collapse than a retreat from two unusually large pools.

NASA itself linked the 2016 surge to the mood of that moment. Then-administrator Charlie Bolden said applicants wanted to help blaze a trail on the “journey to Mars.” But application totals are also shaped by practical details. In 2020, NASA raised the minimum education requirement from a bachelor’s degree to a master’s degree, narrowing who could qualify.

What plausibly explains the decline

The private space industry is another possible part of the answer, although the application figures alone cannot prove it. U.S. space-sector employment grew 27% over the decade through 2024, compared with 14.3% across the private sector. Census Bureau data also show that nearly half of new hires in the space economy in 2024 were under 35.

That matters because strong astronaut applicants — engineers, pilots, physicians and scientists — overlap with the talent commercial space companies want. Those companies were already important in 2016, but the menu of technical careers has widened, offering ways to work on launch vehicles, spacecraft and missions without first winning one of NASA’s rare astronaut slots.

The odds remain severe: 10 candidates emerged from a pool of more than 8,000. There is also a new wrinkle in who reaches space. One of the candidates, Anna Menon, had already flown to orbit aboard the private Polaris Dawn mission in 2024, making her NASA’s first astronaut candidate to have already visited orbit.

What the smaller pile does and doesn’t tell us

It’s tempting to turn a falling application count into a verdict on American ambition. I’d resist that.

An applicant pool measures how many qualified people, in one particular year, decided this specific path was worth the paperwork and the odds. It does not necessarily measure how many people still find spaceflight thrilling.

The astronaut corps also remains small. NASA’s active roster stood at 47 in 2016; its updated fact book listed 37 active astronauts as of February 2026, alongside 10 candidates still in training. A limited number of slots, stricter qualifications and a widening field of adjacent careers all affect the calculation applicants make.

The gender milestone tells you something about who NASA chose. The application count tells you something about how many people chose NASA. Neither one, on its own, says the dream is dying.

If more than 8,000 applications is what interest looks like when the path has real rivals, that’s a dream with more than one address, not necessarily a fading one.
