There’s a moment that happens to a particular kind of person, often in their thirties or forties, often in a parked car or a quiet kitchen at the wrong hour. They scroll through their contacts looking for someone to call and realize they don’t know who they would call. Not who they should call. Who they would. The list is empty in a way that startles them, because the list of people who would call them is long.
That gap is its own particular wound. It doesn’t look like loneliness from the outside. From the outside, it looks like popularity, or competence, or a generous spirit. From the inside, it feels like running a 24-hour emotional pharmacy that no one else has the keys to.
