COMSAT Max Wins Nationwide Networking Contract in India Mumbai, India - June 16, 1999 - COMSAT Max Limited, a joint venture between COMSAT International and MAX India Limited, announced today it has signed a three-year satellite communications contract with Larsen & Toubro, Ltd. (L&T). COMSAT Max will initially link 39 L&T locations, making it one of the satellite industry's largest multiple site networks in India. L&T will use COMSAT Max for group e-mail and software applications to manage personnel requirements, equipment, and supplies for projects. In the future, the network is expected to encompass an even larger number of sites and support additional capabilities such as videoconferencing. L&T is one of India's largest and most diversified conglomerates. The company's services include electrical power, oil and gas refineries, petrochemicals, steel, and mining. COMSAT Max developed an on-demand communications system for L&T using very small aperture terminals (VSATs). By assigning satellite capacity as needed and using small rooftop antennas (3.8 meters in diameter), the system is designed to provide L&T with ample and timely satellite service for all of its diverse business communications requirements. COMSAT Max will manage this critical information backbone with 24-hour monitoring and customer service. "L&T views information technology as a key business enabler, so we were looking to re-engineer and expand the capabilities for our business communications and integrate all of our key business functions," said P. R. Kothari, jt. general manager (central materials & Total Quality Management coordination) Larsen & Toubro, Ltd. "We found that one of the key benefits of the COMSAT Max solution was the complete 'mesh' network design which allows us to communicate throughout India, efficiently and economically, without going through a central facility," he added. "The satellite solution developed by COMSAT Max meets L&T's diverse communications needs by providing extensive transmission capacity and quick response times for their business operations across India," said Sudipta Sen, chief executive officer of COMSAT Max. "This satellite system designed for L&T is another excellent example of the tailored start-to-finish communications solutions COMSAT International provides to its customers," added James J. Welch, president and general manager of COMSAT International. "With COMSAT Max providing network management, L&T can focus its efforts on its day-to-day business operations." COMSAT Max Limited is a business with a leading presence in value-added telecom service in India. The company provides end-to-end communications services management using the latest satellite technology for data, voice, and video transmission.
