The Future Of Space Flight Moscow (RIA Novosti) Feb 01, 2007 The already remarkable times we live in seem to have acquired one more distinctive feature: you can always find a dozen or so desperate characters ready to look into a shark's mouth, dance on the brink of an awakening volcano, or slip under an advancing avalanche. Over the past few decades we have tried more or less successfully to broaden our horizons and take a detached view of ourselves from near-Earth space. Space Commercialization Contracts Signed Washington (UPI) Feb 01, 2007 NASA says it has signed a space commercialization contract with PlanetSpace Inc. of Chicago and the Transformational Space Corp. of Reston, Va. NASA said the agreements signed Wednesday are designed to facilitate the commercialization of low-Earth orbit as capabilities are developed to transport goods and people to orbital destinations. Spirit Studies Layered Rocks And Wind-Blown Drifts Pasadena CA (SPX) Feb 02, 2007 With the rover's third Martian spring just around the corner, Spirit is healthy and has started acquiring movies with the navigation camera in search of dust devils wheeling across the terrain. Spring officially begins on Martian day, or sol 1103 (Feb. 8, 2007). During the past week, Spirit acquired microscopic images of a soil target called "Londonderry," which is an active wind drift shaped by the motion of bouncing sand grains. |
Oriental Satellite Killer: Case No.1 (Part 3) Moscow, Russia (RIA Novosti) Feb 02, 2007 Had a Bit of Fun? Time to Stop ... Is there anyone who can honestly say that he had never committed mischief as a child? I don't think such a paragon of virtue would be easy to find. But my mind refuses to accept the verdict of Major-General Vyacheslav Fateyev, a Russian military expert, who described the recent Chinese tests of anti-satellite weapons as an "act of hooliganism." Latest Revision Signed To Space Operations Doctrine Maxwell AFB (AFNS) Feb 02, 2007 The Air Force chief of staff has approved the latest revision to Air Force Doctrine Document 2-2, Space Operations, outlining the operations of space power. "As a keystone doctrine document, it emphasizes the force multiplying and enabling nature of space operations," said Gen. T. Michael Moseley. "It is our job as Airmen to operate and organize space forces based on the premises articulated in this doctrine," the general said. Space Technology Benefits Medical Community Baltimore MD (SPX) Feb 01, 2007 A small group of APL researchers, in collaboration with physicians from the Johns Hopkins Scleroderma Center in Baltimore, developed and recently completed initial trials for a miniature device to help physicians characterize Raynaud's disease and measure treatment effectiveness. Theory Stretches The Limits Of Composite Materials Madison WI (SPX) Feb 01, 2007 In an advance that could lead to composite materials with virtually limitless performance capabilities, a University of Wisconsin-Madison scientist has dispelled a 50-year-old theoretical notion that composite materials must be made only of "stable" individual materials to be stable overall. Cassini Images Mammoth Cloud Engulfing Titan's North Pole Paris, France (ESA) Feb 02, 2007 A giant cloud half the size of the United States has been imaged on Saturn's moon Titan by the Cassini spacecraft. The cloud may be responsible for the material that fills the lakes discovered last year by Cassini's radar instrument. Cloaked by winter's shadow, this cloud has now come into view as winter turns to spring. |

Modeling Other Earths Moffet Field CA (SPX) Feb 02, 2007 More than 200 extrasolar planets have been found so far, but our knowledge about those distant worlds is very limited. Satellite Data Vital To UN Climate Findings Paris, France (ESA) Feb 02, 2007 The most authoritative report on climate change to date will be released tomorrow in Paris, France, and is expected to warn of rising global sea levels and temperatures. Earth observation from space plays an invaluable role in helping scientists advance our understanding of climate change and capability to model its evolution. |
