Egypt Plans First Remote Sensing Satellite Cairo (AFP) Jan 16, 2007 Egypt will soon launch its first remote sensing satellite from a base in Kazakhstan, an official was quoted as saying in the top-selling state-owned Al-Ahram daily Tuesday. "We will soon complete the final stage for launching the first satellite for remote sensing and scientific research, 'Misr Sat 1'," said Ayman Desouqi, from the National Authority for Remote Sensing. The COTS Enigma Honolulu HI (SPX) Jan 16, 2007 NASA's Commercial Orbital Transportation Services program has been widely hailed by the alt.space community as a breakthrough in US launch policy, but the numbers just don't add up. Brightest Comet Ever Observed By Soho Paris, France (ESA) Jan 17, 2007 Comet C/2006 P1 (McNaught) has become the brightest comet that has been observed by the SOHO instruments since the start of routine operations in early 1996. In its own right, McNaught is the brightest comet observed in the last 40 years. The exact peak apparent magnitude of the comet is not yet determined, but it is currently estimated at -5.5 (see also the related link to the International Comet Quarterly's (ICQ) list of brightest comets). This makes it several magnitudes brighter than SOHO's previously observed brightest comet: C/2002 V1 (NEAT) at about -0.5 magnitude. |
XCOR Aerospace Begins Test Firing Of Methane Rocket Engine Mojave CA (SPX) Jan 17, 2007 XCOR Aerospace has completed a series of successful test firings of its new 7,500 pound thrust rocket engine. The tests were conducted as part of a $3.3 million subcontract XCOR has with Alliant Techsystems. The tests support NASA's advanced development program to obtain liquid methane rocket engine technology for future space applications. Six short-duration test fires have been completed. Map Of Titan With Labels Pasadena CA (SPX) Jan 17, 2007 This global digital map of Titan was created using data taken by the Cassini spacecraft Imaging Science Subsystem (ISS). The data here consist of images taken using a filter centered at 938 nanometers, allowing researchers to examine albedo (or inherent brightness) variations across the surface of Titan. Checking Out The Stellar Neighborhood Atlanta GA (SPX) Jan 16, 2007 Ancient astronomers logically focused their efforts on the brightest stars, the ones they could see in the night sky. Many modern astronomers, aided by ever-more-sensitive telescopes, have investigated objects that are unimaginably distant and ancient, phenomenally bright and powerful. |

Planck Satellite To Be Presented To Media Paris, France (ESA) Jan 17, 2007 ESA PR 04-2007. By the end of February, integration of Planck, the ESA spacecraft due to study relic radiation from the Big Bang, will have been completed - and so too will a major step towards launch. ESA and Alcatel Alenia Space (AAS) are jointly inviting the media to a press conference to be held at the AAS facilities in Cannes, France, on 1 February to hear about the mission's technological achievements and scientific objectives and to view the spacecraft in all its splendour. Meetings On Three Islands To Discuss Telescope Replacement Manoa HI (SPX) Jan 15, 2007 Replacing a University of Hawaii telescope atop Mauna Kea with one that can spot Earth-threatening asteroids and comets is the subject of public meetings slated to take place January 23-31, 2007, on Hawaii, Maui and Oahu. The Hawaii island meetings will take place at Kealakehe Intermediate School Cafeteria on Tuesday, January 23, 2007, in Waimea Civic Center on Wednesday, January 24, 2007, and at the University of Hawaii at Hilo Campus Center on Thursday, January 25, 2007. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and the meetings will begin at 6:00 p.m. Ball Aerospace/NASA Achieve Key Technology Milestone For James Webb Space Telescope Boulder CO (SPX) Jan 15, 2007 A team of engineers from Ball Aerospace and Technologies Corp. and NASA have successfully met the criteria needed to demonstrate Technology Readiness Level 6 (TRL-6) for the Wavefront Sensing and Control for the James Webb Space Telescope, a measure used by NASA to assess the maturity of evolving technologies. |
Indonesia And Malaysia Seek Reciprocal Satellite Uses Jakarta (XNA) Jan 17, 2007 Indonesia and Malaysia are holding discussions to finalize a reciprocal agreement as a prerequisite to the granting of landing rights to the two countries' satellites, an official said Tuesday. "The reciprocal agreement is designed to give the two countries equal opportunities in providing satellite services," said Gatot Dewa Broto, a spokesman of the postal service and telecommunication directorate at the Information and Communication Ministry. Japanese Government Initiates Space-Borne Hyperspectral Payload Program Tokyo (SPX) Jan 17, 2007 Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) recently announced the initiation of a 5-year program for the research and development of a next-generation Earth observation satellite payload with hyperspectral capabilities. METI has a long heritage of successful satellite payload projects focused on resource exploration and management - including the ASTER sensor (on NASA's Terra spacecraft) and the PALSAR sensor (on JAXA's ALOS spacecraft). Tim De Zeeuw To Become The Next Director General Of ESO Paris, France (ESO) Jan 16, 2007 The ESO Council has just appointed Tim de Zeeuw, 50, as the next Director General of ESO, effective as of 1 September 2007, when the current Director General, Catherine Cesarsky will complete her mandate.
