Starchaser Industries Wins European Space Agency Contract For Tourism Study Manchester, UK (SPX) Jan 15, 2007 Starchaser industries has been awarded a study contract from the European Space Agency for the detailed assessment of their Thunderstar / Starchaser 5A space tourism reusable launch vehicle to verify its technical feasibility and ability to meet future space tourists expectations. The study will also refine the Starchaser Business Plan to demonstrate that space tourism can be sustained in a wholly commercial environment. This 150,000 euro contract is part of ESA's Survey of European Privately-Funded Vehicles for Commercial Human Space Flight, which was designed to identify European space tourism ventures, evaluate their feasibility, and assess their associated technologies. |

Russia And Europe Join Forces In Space Moscow (RIA Novosti) Jan 15, 2007 Russian and European firms are pursuing a joint program to develop heavy-duty launch vehicles. The program, known as Oural, is financed equally by both parties. The European Space Agency, as its spokesmen are wont to say, is "Europe's passport to space." Today it comprises 15 countries, including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Britain, Norway and others. For a long time the Old World's space program was way behind that of the United States, but measures taken by the ESA in recent years have improved its situation. Russia In Talks To Build 12 Spacecraft For NASA And ESA Moscow (RIA Novosti) Jan 15, 2007 Russian spacecraft manufacturer Energia is in talks with NASA and ESA on contracts to build 12 rocket carriers for the U.S. and European space agencies, the head of the corporation said Thursday. Europe Forges Long-Term Strategy For Space Exploration Edinburgh, Scotland (SPX) Jan 09, 2007 Representatives from the UK and other European political, industrial and scientific sectors, together with members of the general public are helping to shape the future direction of space exploration. |

Gravity Mission To Benefit From QinetiQ Precision Paris, France (SPX) Jan 15, 2007 QinetiQ has conducted the final testing of its T5 ion thrusters that will enable a European space mission to measure and map the Earth's gravity field in far greater detail than ever previously achieved. QinetiQ's T5 ion thrusters will provide high precision drag compensation for the European Space Agency (ESA) GOCE spacecraft, due for launch later this year. The data captured by GOCE will contribute significantly to our understanding of the Earth's structure, climate and the impacts of climate change. Spirit Continues To Test New Computer Smarts Pasadena CA (JPL) Jan 15, 2007 Spirit spent much of the past week studying a layered rock exposure known as "Montalva." During the study, the rover used the brush on the rock abrasion tool, the microscopic imager, the alpha-particle X-ray spectrometer that collects information about elemental composition, and the Moessbauer spectrometer that identifies iron-bearing minerals. Geologists Discover Origin Of Mysterious Black Diamonds Upton NY (SPX) Jan 15, 2007 If indeed "a diamond is forever," the most primitive origins of Earth's so-called black diamonds were in deep, universal time, geologists have discovered. Black diamonds came from none other than interstellar space. In a paper published online on December 20, 2006, in the journal Astrophysical Journal Letters, scientists Jozsef Garai and Stephen Haggerty of Florida International University, along with Case Western Reserve University researchers Sandeep Rekhi and Mark Chance, claim an extraterrestrial origin for the unique black diamonds, also called carbonado diamonds. |
