MRO Conducts Details Survery Of Mars Pathfinder Landing Site And Surroundings
Pasadena CA (JPL) Jan 11, 2007
The high-resolution camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has imaged the 1997 landing site of NASA's Mars Pathfinder, revealing new details of hardware on the surface and the geology of the region. Pathfinder landed on July 4, 1997, and transmitted data for 12 weeks. Unlike the two larger rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, currently active on Mars, Sojourner could communicate only with the lander, not directly with Earth.

NASA Funds Scripps Instrument For Probing For Life On Mars
San Diego CA (SPX) Jan 11, 2007
On Monday, NASA announced $750,000 in funding for development of an instrument to detect signs of life on Mars proposed by a scientist at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. The instrument is designed to provide the most rigorous analysis possible for the past and present existence of biological compounds on Mars' surface, according to Jeffrey Bada, a professor at Scripps and lead investigator on the project team.

Copernicus And the Wild Goose Chase
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Jan 12, 2007
The inspiration for Thomas D'Urfrey's comic production, Wonders of the Sun, was the world's original science fiction story written in the English language - Francis Godwin's Man in the Moone. Like its great rival for the honour of inventing modern science fiction, Johannes Kepler's Somnium, Godwin's story is an off-world voyage of discovery greatly influenced by the radical ideas of The New Philosophy, especially those of Copernicus.

Interactive Binary Stars Show Signs Of Induced Hyperactivity
Bloomington IN (SPX) Jan 11, 2007
Astronomers studying highly energetic binary stars called polars have obtained the first observational evidence that the intense magnetic fields produced by the white dwarf half of the interacting pair can induce flares, sunspots and other explosive activity in its otherwise low-wattage, low-mass partner.

      SOHO Prepares For Comet Mcnaught
Paris, France (ESA) Jan 12, 2007
Recently, sky watchers in the Northern Hemisphere have been enjoying the sight of Comet McNaught in the twilight sky. Now, solar physicists using the ESA-NASA SOHO spacecraft are getting ready for their view. For four days in January, the comet will pass through SOHO's line of sight and could be the brightest comet SOHO has ever seen. As Comet McNaught heads towards its closest approach to the Sun on 12 January 2007, it will disappear from view for earthbound observers, becoming lost in the Sun's glare.

All Four Satellites In Healthy Condition After PSLV Launch
Thiruvananthapuram, India (PTI) Jan 12, 2007
All four satellites put into orbit by the PSLV-C7 "are very healthy" and first picture from Cartosat will be received tomorrow. The PSLV-C7 blasted off from the spaceport at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre yesterday, carrying four satellites -- the 680 kg Indian Remote Sensing Satellite CARTOSAT-2, the 550-kg Space Capsule Recovery Equipment (SRE-1), Indonesia's LAPAN-TUBSAT and Argentina's 6-kg nanosatellite, PEHUENSAT-1.

Researchers Use Wikipedia To Make Computers Smarter
    Tel-Aviv, Israel (SPX) Jan 10, 2007
Researchers at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology have found a way to give computers encyclopedic knowledge of the world to help them "think smarter," making common sense and broad-based connections between topics just as the human mind does.

CDF Precision Measurement Of W-boson Mass Suggests A Lighter Higgs Particle
Batavia IL (SPX) Jan 09, 2007
Scientists of the CDF collaboration at the Department of Energy's Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory announced the world's most precise measurement by a single experiment of the mass of the W boson, the carrier of the weak nuclear force and a key parameter of the Standard Model of particles and forces.

University Of Chicago Receives Supercomputer Time For Supernova Simulations
Chicago IL (SPX) Jan 09, 2007
The University of Chicago's Center for Astrophysical Thermonuclear Flashes will perform the world's most advanced simulations of exploding white dwarf stars with an allocation of 2.5 million hours of processing time on the U.S. Department of Energy's high-performance computers. The simulations will be made possible by a DOE award called INCITE (Innovative and Novel Computation Impact on Theory and Experiment), announced today in Washington, D.C.

Hunt On For Next World-Changing Gadget At US Electronics Show
Las Vegas (AFP) Nevada, Jan 7, 2007
People are snapping up new technology, altering the fabric of society from the heart of the home to the driver's seat, the organizer of the world's largest consumer electronics show said here Saturday. Sales of consumer electronics from manufacturers to retailers in the United States is expected to surpass 155 billion dollars in 2007, a six percent rise from 2006, according to the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA).

Famous Space Pillars Feel the Heat of Star's Explosion
Pasadena CA (SPX) Jan 10, 2007
The three iconic space pillars photographed by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope in 1995 might have met their demise, according to new evidence from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope. A new, striking image from Spitzer shows the intact dust towers next to a giant cloud of hot dust thought to have been scorched by the blast of a star that exploded, or went supernova. Astronomers speculate that the supernova's shock wave could have already reached the dusty towers, causing them to topple about 6,000 years ago.

Eileen Collins: An Astronaut's Endless Endeavor
Washington DC (SPX) Jan 12, 2007
An astronaut's work, it seems, is never done. Eileen Collins retired in May, but by October she still hadn't found time to finish cleaning out her office. "I'm still answering mail from 2005," she said. "I haven't wound down yet. I've been extremely busy."
