Californians Bask In Solar Energy As Sales Soar Sacramento (UPI) Jan 04, 2007 Soaring energy costs, environmental consciousness and financial incentives have combined to make solar panels part of the California housing landscape. Homeowners see solar panels as a way to be green and save some green, The New York Times said. Architects are incorporating solar systems into custom home designs and developers can provide solar systems and solar-ready wiring in new construction. The trend began after the state legislature approved the California Solar Initiative, a solar program that offers homeowners rebates in addition to the federal tax credit of up to $2,000 available since 2006. |

US Researchers Study Space Weather Beijing (SPX) Jan 05, 2007 Johnathan Makela doesn't have his head in the clouds, but one could say he's "spaced out" when it comes to weather. Makela, a University of Illinois electrical- and computer-engineering professor, isn't concerned about the first six or seven miles of Earth's atmosphere -- where clouds and storms form -- he's trying to discover a way to forecast the weather in the ionosphere, the region of Earth's atmosphere found about 45 to 600 miles above the planet. |

X-ray Evidence Supports Possible New Class Of Supernova Huntsville AL (SPX) Jan 05, 2007 Evidence for a significant new class of supernova has been found with NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton. These results strengthen the case for a population of stars that evolve rapidly and are destroyed by thermonuclear explosions. Such "prompt" supernovas could be valuable tools for probing the early history of the cosmos.
