New Horizons in 2007
Boulder CO (SPX) Jan 04, 2007
What a memorable year for New Horizons! After a last few ground preparations and flight approvals, we launched at 1900 GMT on 19 January. I will never forget the sight of the giant, 210-foot tall "A train" leaving Florida for the Kuiper Belt, and how filled with pride I was for everyone who worked to see this milestone come to pass. Launch was all we could have ever wished for. As a result, following launch, we only needed tiny trajectory correction maneuvers to put us on course for the Pluto aim point at Jupiter. On the way there, the New Horizons team undertook a series of virtually flawlessly executed, multi-month spacecraft and instrument payload checkouts, an unexpected small asteroid flyby, and a long series of behind the scenes preparations for our Jupiter encounter-which begins this month!

    Spirit Rests During Dust Storm
Pasadena CA (SPX) Jan 04, 2007
A sudden dust storm cut short Spirit's investigation of a volcanic rock and kicked enough dust into the Martian atmosphere to drive solar power levels to an all-time low. Spirit's team of scientists and engineers decided to move the rover to a spot where the solar panels would be tilted toward the sun to increase the amount of electrical power available.

Titan Has Liquid Lakes Scientists Reports Nature
Pasadena CA (JPL) Jan 04, 2007
Scientists report definitive evidence of the presence of lakes filled with liquid methane on Saturn's moon Titan in this week's journal Nature cover story. Radar imaging data from a July 22, 2006, flyby provide convincing evidence for large bodies of liquid on Titan today. A new false-color radar view gives a taste of what Cassini saw. Some highlights of the article follow below.

Black Hole Boldly Goes Where No Black Hole Has Gone Before
Paris, France (ESA) Jan 04, 2007
Astronomers have found a black hole where few thought they could ever exist, inside a globular star cluster. The finding has broad implications for the dynamics of stars clusters and also for the existence of a still-speculative new class of black holes called 'intermediate-mass' black holes.
