Spanish Motorway Group Abertis Buys 32 Percent Of Eutelsat

Spanish motorway group Abertis said on Tuesday that it had agreed to pay 1.07 billion euros (1.42 billion dollars) for 32.0 percent of European satellite operator Eutelsat, becoming the biggest shareholder. Abertis said it had reached an agreement with investment funds owning shares in Eutelsat, naming the funds as Nebozzo, Cinven and Goldman Sachs.

    Spirit Slowly Begins Driving Again

    Spirit is healthy and preparing to drive away from the rover's winter station after completing scientific investigation of a rock nicknamed "King George Island." The rock, according to principal investigator Steve Squyres, contains some of the best-rounded grains ever seen in a Martian rock. Scientists will try to determine how the grains formed -- perhaps with help from wind or water.

    Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Images Spirit Atop Columbia Hills

    New images from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter show three additional NASA spacecraft that have landed on Mars: the Spirit rover active on the surface since January 2004 and the two Viking landers that successfully reached the surface in 1976. The orbiter's high-resolution camera took a dramatic photograph of Spirit's twin rover, Opportunity, at the edge of a Martian crater two months ago.

    ISRO Chief Plans Moon Mission launching In Early 2008

    Press Trust Of India reports that India's space mission to the Moon is scheduled to be launched early 2008, Indian Space Research Organisation chairman G Madhavan Nair has said. "The Moon Mission is scheduled to be launched from Sriharikota early 2008 using Polar Satellite Launching Vehicle (PSLV) and would take five days to reach near the Moon's orbit," the ISRO Chief told PTI when asked about the progress of the ambitious mission.

      US Plans To Build Moon Base Starting In 2020

    NASA has announced plans to establish a permanently-occupied lunar base with manned missions starting in 2020, a key step in further human exploration of the solar system. The project, which would send humans back to the lunar surface for the first time since 1972, is a long-term joint effort of 14 of the world's space agencies, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration said Monday.

    Russia To Join US Lunar Exploration Program If Funded

    Russia will join the U.S Moon exploration program if Washington provides the necessary funding, a Russian space representative said Tuesday. After U.S. President George W. Bush announced his Vision for Space Exploration in 2004, a plan for new manned lunar missions, the country's National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) elaborated a program that envisions the construction of a manned lunar base, which will require broad international cooperation.

    Foundation Joins Planetary Society Call For An International Lunar Decade

    Systems In Great Shape For US Space Shuttle Mission Says NASA

    NASA said Tuesday its systems were in good shape and the countdown was going well for Thursday's launch of the Space Shuttle Discovery's mission to the International Space Station (ISS). Set for Thursday at 9:35 pm (0235 GMT Friday), it will be the first night launch since the Columbia disaster in 2003. "Our systems are currently in great shape, countdown is progressing and we have no issues of consequence," Steven Payne, test director of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), told a media briefing.

    NASA Announces a New Servicing Mission to the Hubble Space Telescope

    Shuttle astronauts will make one final house call to NASA's Hubble Space Telescope as part of a mission to extend and improve the observatory's capabilities through 2013. On October 31 NASA Administrator Michael Griffin announced plans for a fifth servicing mission to Hubble Tuesday during a meeting with agency employees at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md. Goddard is the agency center responsible for managing Hubble.

    Arianespace To Launch COMS-1 For South Korea

    The Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) has chosen Arianespace to launch its COMS-1 multimission satellite. Jean-Yves Le Gall, Chief Executive Officer of Arianespace, and Dr. Hong-Yul Paik, President of KARI, signed the launch service contract for the COMS-1 satellite. COMS-1 will be placed into geostationary transfer orbit by an Ariane 5 from the Guiana Space Center, Europe's Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, between the end of 2008 and June 2009.

      Russia In Talks With Other Countries On Joint Glonass Use

    Russia is negotiating with other countries on the possible joint use of Russia's global positioning satellite system Glonass, the head of the Russian Space Agency said Tuesday. Glonass, a Russian version of the U.S. Global Positioning System (GPS), is designed for both military and civilian purposes, and allows users to identify their positions in real time. It can also be used in geological prospecting.

    NASA Telescope Sees Black Hole Munch On A Star

    A giant black hole has been caught red-handed dipping into a cosmic cookie jar of stars by NASA's Galaxy Evolution Explorer. This is the first time astronomers have seen the whole process of a black hole eating a star, from its first to nearly final bites. "This type of event is very rare, so we are lucky to study the entire process from beginning to end," said Dr. Suvi Gezari of the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, Calif. Gezari is lead author of a new paper appearing in the Dec. 10 issue of Astrophysical Journal Letters.
