Russia To Sign Contract To Launch South Korean Astronaut Into Space
Moscow, Russia (RIA Novosti) Nov 30, 2006
Russia will sign a contract with South Korea December 7 to launch the East Asian country's first astronaut on board a Russian carrier rocket in 2008, the Federal Space Agency said Wednesday. The number of hopefuls to become South Korea's first ever astronaut has dropped from 36,000 to 30. The final candidate and one reserve will be selected soon. Two final candidates will start training at Russia's Gagarin space center near Moscow in spring 2007, according to agency press secretary Igor Panarin. "The project has the South Korean president's special support, and will serve to strengthen relations between Russia and South Korea," Panarin said, adding the project was 100% financed by Seoul.

    China's First Circumlunar Exploration Satellite To Be Ready Next Feb

    China will wrap up construction of the country's first circumlunar exploration satellite, Chang'e I, by February so that the moon orbiting project will start on schedule, according to moon probe program chief scientist Ouyang Ziyuan. "We've made good progress with the crucial technology. Testing work will be completed by the end of the year," the academician from the Chinese Academy of Sciences was quoted as saying by the Beijing Daily on Wednesday.

    Space Station Crew Conduct Fire Drill

    NASA says International Space Station crew members conducted a fire drill this week as part of their ongoing emergency preparedness training. The Expedition 14 crew conducted the Monday fire drill with the support of the U.S. mission control center in Houston, as well as scientists at the Russian mission control center. NASA said flight engineers Mikhail Tyurin and Thomas Reiter this week are also practicing rendezvous pitch maneuver photography using digital still cameras.
