Rocketplane Kistler And ATK Announce Agreement For K-1 Launch Vehicle And COTS Program

Rocketplane Kistler (RpK) and Alliant Techsystems (NYSE: ATK) announced today that ATK will become the lead contractor for RpK's K-1 launch vehicle, which was recently awarded a Space Act Agreement by NASA for the Commercial Orbital Transportation Services (COTS) program. The K-1 is a fully reusable space transportation system designed to provide cost-effective and reliable transport of cargo and science payloads to and from the International Space Station (ISS). Under terms of the agreement, ATK will provide launch vehicle development, assembly, integration and test of the launch system, and will conduct launch and landing site development and launch vehicle preparation for the K-1.

    AMC-18 Launch Campaign Begins

    The activity pace is picking up for Arianespace's December heavy-lift Ariane 5 mission as final pre-launch preparations begin with SES AMERICOM's AMC-18 satellite payload. After arriving at the Spaceport, AMC-18 made the traditional fit check today (November 7) with its Ariane 5 payload adapter, which verifies the correct interface between the satellite and the launcher hardware.

    TerreStar Networks Chooses Arianespace to Launch TerreStar I

    Arianespace and TerreStar Networks have signed a "Launch on Demand" contract for TerreStar I, which will be the largest commercial communications satellite ever launched into geostationary orbit. "We are very proud of our role in the development of the TerreStar system," said Jean-Yves Le Gall, Arianespace CEO.

    IADB Lends Argentina $50 Millon For Sat Program

    The Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) on Tuesday signed an agreement with Argentina to provide a loan for the country's satellite program, Argentina's Foreign Minister Jorge Taiana said. Taiana said that the IADB would lend Argentina 50 million U.S. dollars to expand the country's satellite system, which includes launching two new orbiters in 2010 and 2011. The total satellite program would cost 200 million dollars.

    Egypt To Launch First Scientific Satellite - Late 2007

    Egyptian Higher Education Minister Hani Hillal said Tuesday that Egypt, in cooperation with Ukraine, will launch a scientific satellite by the end of 2007 in Kazakhstan, the official news agency MENA reported. The satellite, named as Egyptsat 1, will be launched from Kazakhstan with the aim of providing necessary information to serve development in all fields, Hillal said.

    Nigeria To Build Second Space Satellite

    Nigeria has signed a deal with British satellite maker Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL)to build a second space satellite, a government official said hereon Monday. Felix Ale, spokesman for Nigeria's Space Research and Development Agency, said the deal between Nigeria and SSTL is expected to culminate in the launch of Nigeria SAT 2 by 2008, an earth observation satellite which has a seven-year lifespan.

    Russia Plans To Improve Outer Space Monitoring Capabilities

    Russia's Space Forces will significantly improve the technical capabilities of its main space-monitoring installation in Tajikistan, a deputy commander of the Okno center said Wednesday. Russia's Okno (Window) space-monitoring complex, located at an altitude of 2,200 meters (about 7,200 feet) in the mountains near the Tajik eastern city of Nurek, was commissioned in March 2004.
