Putin Clears Space Pact With India

Clearing the way for joint space exploration and transfer of space technology to New Delhi, the Indo-Russian space cooperation agreement has been signed into a federal law by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Putin signed the pact into a federal law after both houses of Russian parliament unanimously approved the pact last month allowing the transfer of sensitive space technology to India for the peaceful use of outer space, Kremlin press service on Monday said.

    China To Launch More Than 50 Small Satellites In Next Five To Ten Years

    China will launch more than 50 small satellites, each weighing less than 1,000 kilograms, in next five to ten years, a Chinese space company announced here at a major air show in Guangdong province. "The 50 small satellites and their systems will be widely applied in observation, scientific experiments and environment and disaster monitoring," said a source with the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corp. (CASIC), adding 200 to 300 small satellites would be launched globally in next five to ten years.

    India's space scientists and technologists will hold a brain-storming session on Tuesday to explore the viability of undertaking a manned mission to the moon by the end of the next decade. With President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam rooting for such an adventure, about 50-60 experts from top research labs and scientific institutions will get a preview of the ambitious project conceived by the Indian Space Research Organisation that is planning to send an Indian astronaut into space on a indigenous space capsule by 2014.

      Monster Stellar Flare Seen By NASA Scientists Dwarfs All Others

    Scientists using NASA's Swift satellite have spotted a stellar flare on a nearby star so powerful that, had it been from our sun, it would have triggered a mass extinction on Earth. The flare was perhaps the most energetic magnetic stellar explosion ever detected. The flare was seen in December 2005 on a star slightly less massive than the sun, in a two-star system called II Pegasi in the constellation Pegasus.

    Raytheon has achieved a key milestone on the Modernized User Equipment program by successfully acquiring and tracking for the first time a new M-code military signal transmitted by the latest-generation global positioning system satellite. Although the first modernized satellite, GPS Block IIR-14(M), has been operating with legacy signals since December 2005, it only recently began test broadcast of the new M-code. The code provides enhanced accuracy, encryption and anti-jamming capability for authorized users.

The intention? Joining an earlier subsatellite PFS-1, released by Apollo 15 astronauts eight months earlier, PFS-2 was to measure charged particles and magnetic fields all around the Moon as the Moon orbited Earth.
