MDA Enters Strategic Deal With Rocketplane Kistler

MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd., a provider of essential information solutions, announced today that it has signed a strategic long term Agreement with Rocketplane Kistler to participate in the initial and future phases of the Commercial Orbital Transportation Services program. The Agreement is expected to evolve as financing, technical and customer milestones are being met. Rocketplane Kistler is one of the two finalists selected recently by NASA to develop a COTS demonstration model.

    Discovery Rolls Toward Launch

    In darkness, Discovery rolls out of its processing facility at NASA's Kennedy Space Center for the short trip to the Vehicle Assembly Building. Once there, the orbiter will be joined to its large external tank and twin solid rocket boosters, which are already stacked on the mobile launch platform. Discovery is scheduled to roll out no earlier than Nov. 7.

    The 438-day flight aboard the Mir orbiter by physician Valery Polyakov at the end of the last century showed there are no fundamental medical or biological restrictions to extended space missions. Radiation, however, is another matter. Its effects intensify multifold when the vehicle leaves the protection of the Earth's magnetosphere. This demands a special anti-radiation facility. It might be a radiation shelter that could absorb charged particles or an artificial electromagnetic field built up around the craft.

    Chinese Lunar Orbiter Prototype At Air Show

    A prototype of China's proposed lunar orbiter went on display at a major air show on Monday. The prototype displayed in a 50-square-meter sand pit at Airshow China 2006 in Zhuhai, south China's Guangdong Province, is a simulation of the surface of the moon and produced by China Aviation Industry Corp.

    The infrared surveyor AKARI, a Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) mission with ESA participation, is nearing the completion of its first scan of the entire sky. During this phase of the mission, it has supplied the largest wavelength coverage of the Large Magellanic Cloud to date, and provided fascinating new images of this galaxy. The Large Magellanic Cloud is a neighbouring galaxy to the Milky Way.
