1000 Sols On Mars

click for desktop NASA's long-lived Mars Exploration Rover Spirit will finish its 1,000th Martian day Thursday, continuing a successful mission originally planned for 90 Martian days. A color 360-degree panorama released today -- produced from the most detailed imaging yet completed by either Spirit or its twin, Opportunity -- shows rugged terrain of the robot's current location amid a range of hills. Spirit has been examining the surroundings for several months while perched with a tilt to the north for maximum solar energy during winter in Mars' southern hemisphere.

      China Launches Two Space Experiment Satellites

    China successfully launched two satellites for space environment exploration into space with a Long March-4B carrier rocket Tuesday morning. They were launched from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in north China's Shanxi province at 7:34 a.m. Satellite A was detached from the rocket after 11 minutes of take-off, followed by the detachment of Satellite B about one minute later. Both have successfully entered preset orbits.

    NASA To Launch 3D Mission To Study Sun

    NASA plans to launch Wednesday a 3-D mission to study the sun, using twin satellites in mirror orbits to trace the fiery star's streams of energy and matter to Earth. "We are at the dawning of a new age of solar observations," Russ Howard of the Naval Research Laboratory said at a NASA news conference. The two-year Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) mission will be the first to view the sun from two separate vantage points outside Earth's orbit.

Spectrolab pioneered this type of cell in 1983, perfecting the technology for production several years later. Spectrolab's advancements gave satellite operators the option of doubling satellite power and increasing potential revenue or controlling costs by reducing spacecraft size without sacrificing capability.

      Russia Can Repel Asteroids To Save Earth

    Russia is prepared to repel asteroids to save Earth "if necessary," deputy head of the Russian space agency Viktor Remishevsky said Tuesday, ITAR-TASS news agency reported. "If necessary, Russia's rocket-manufacturing complex can create the means in space to repulse asteroids threatening Earth," Remishevsky said, without giving further details. The official stressed that saving Earth from the threat of asteroids demanded international cooperation.
