Space Financing Via Public-Private Partnership For TerraSAR-X

This year, for the first time, a new German satellite, TerraSAR-X, will be launched in a project financed by joint funding from both the public and private sectors. As contractor, the German Space Agency, part of of the German Aerospace Agency (DLR), is responsible for management of the entire project and, together with DLR research institutes, will pay 80 percent of the satellite's cost; EADS SPACE built the satellite and is financing the remaining 20 percent.

    NASA Mars Spacecraft Gear Up For Extra Work

    NASA's Mars robotic missions are performing so well, they are being prepared for additional overtime work. The team operating the twin Mars Exploration Rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, since January 2004, won approval for an additional year of exploration. NASA funded the extensions on recommendations from an outside panel of scientists.

    Spirit Activates New Software

    Following some dramatic scrambling by rover handlers to command both Mars Exploration Rovers to switch to new flight software during a bit of a traffic jam at the Red Planet, Spirit successfully woke up and began operating with the new software. The X-band frequency for communicating directly with Earth had become unavailable while being used by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter during critical events for that mission.

    European Planetary Scientists Highlight Sample Return As Key Priority

    The world's first female space tourist and first space blogger, American national Anousheh Ansari, told the world Monday of the difficulties of keeping tidy in zero gravity. "Well my friends, I must admit keeping good hygiene in space is not easy!" the Iranian-born woman wrote, saying she would reveal what "everyone wants to know" but is too modest to ask.

    NASA Balloon Carries High Altitude Student Platform To The Edge Of Space

    The head of America's space program, NASA Chief Michael Griffin, is keeping to a busy itinerary, meeting his Chinese counterpart and visiting Beijing facilities since his arrival Saturday. Griffin's six-day trip marks the first time a NASA chief has visited China. Griffin began his tour Sunday at the Chinese Academy of Space Technology where he met its president, Yuan Jiayun.

    NASA Announces New Advisory Council Members

    NASA Administrator Michael Griffin named nine new members to the NASA Advisory Council on Friday, including Dr. Edward David, Jr., Chair of the Science Committee, and Dr. Paul Robinson, Chair of the new Space Operations Committee. "These outstanding individuals will add to an already strong group and will greatly assist Chairman Schmitt in meeting the Council's goals," Griffin said.

    Expedition 14 Takes Command As Expedition 13 Prepares for Earth

    New station residents Commander Michael Lopez-Alegria and Flight Engineer Mikhail Tyurin are in charge of the orbiting complex. Flight Engineer Thomas Reiter officially joined Expedition 14 last week. Meanwhile, Expedition 13 Commander Pavel Vinogradov and Flight Engineer Jeff Williams are preparing to return to Earth on Thursday, Sept. 28. Spaceflight Participant Anousheh Ansari will also end her visit that day and return with Expedition 13.

    ISS Crew To Turn On Air Regeneration System After Repairs September 26

    The 13th crew is completing repairs on the Russian oxygen regeneration system at the International Space Station and is planning to turn it on September 26, a member of the outgoing crew said Monday. The Elektron system was turned off September 20 after high temperature damaged its rubber seals.

    Thanks to the unique possibilities offered by ESO's Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI), astronomers have solved a 140-year-old mystery concerning active hot stars. They indeed show that the star Alpha Arae is spinning almost on the verge of breaking and that its disc rotates the same way planets do around the Sun.

    Scientists using NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope have discovered and directly imaged a small brown dwarf star, 50 times the mass of Jupiter, orbiting with a planet around a Sun-like star.
