Atlantis Astronauts End Spacewalk Marred By Slippery Fingers

Two Atlantis shuttle astronauts turned into space mechanics Wednesday armed with tools to set up a pair of power-producing solar panels on the half-finished International Space Station. Canadian astronaut Steve MacLean and US counterpart Dan Burbank struggled with troublesome bolts in the second of three planned spacewalks, even though NASA deemed the excursion a success overall.

    Russian Duma Rejects Madonna Space Holiday

    Russia's parliament voted Wednesday against a motion to send the celebrated US singer, actress and children's book author Madonna to the Space Station in 2008. Alexei Mitrofanov, a member of the Duma for the ultra-nationalist LDPR party, had said the trip would be "a great event to organise in the same year as elections in the United States and Russia."

    China Launches Telecom Satellite

    China launched a new telecommunications satellite, Zhongxing-22A, with a Long March-3A rocket carrier, at the Xichang Satellite Launch Center, at 00:02 on Wednesday. Twenty-five minutes later, the Xi'an Satellite Monitoring and Controling Center reported that Zhongxing-22A successfully entered onto the preset orbit, at a perigee of 207 kilometers and an apogee of 42,000 kilometers.

      Taiwan To Deploy Home-Grown Missile Shield

    Taiwan will introduce a new home-grown anti-missile shield next year as part of the island's efforts to boost defense capabilities against China, reports said Wednesday. The shield, known as the Anti Tactical Ballistic Missile, is "expected to effectively counter the threat of China's M-9 and M-11 ballistic missiles," Taiwan's Apple Daily paper said.

    Once the proud outermost planet of the Solar System, Pluto has been consigned to the status of a small-town telephone number after the world's paramount astronomical body tore up its membership of the cosmic A-list. The enigmatic, icy world spotted in 1930 has been given the official monicker of 134340 Pluto and lumped among 136,562 asteroids and other small bodies by the Minor Planet Center, part of the Paris-headquartered International Astronomical Union.
