Volunteers Sought For Four-Month Arctic Mars Mission Simulation

The Mars Society is seeking seven volunteers to participate as members of the crew of the Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station (FMARS) during an extended simulation of human Mars exploration operations on Devon Island (May 1 through August 31, 2007). As currently planned, the crew will consist of four individuals chosen primarily for their skills as field scientists in areas including geology, geochemistry, microbiology, biochemistry, and paleontology.

    High in the Arctic, just below Earth's north polar ice cap, a collaboration of nearly two dozen biologists, geologists, and engineers have embarked on an expedition to Mars. The scientists and researchers are spending two and a half weeks at the Svalbard archipelago in the Arctic Ocean north of Norway.

    ISRO Wins Contracts To Build Satellites

    The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has won several commercial contracts to build two communication satellites for European customers. Giving the information in a written reply in Rajya Sabha on Thursday, Minister of State in Prime Minister's Office Prithviraj Chavan said ISRO, through its commercial arm ANTRIX Corporation, has bagged the contracts.

    SpaceDev Awarded Patent For Hybrid Propulsion Technology

    SpaceDev has been issued a United States patent for its hybrid propulsion technology. The U.S. Patent Office issued U.S. Patent No. 7,069,717, entitled "Hybrid Propulsion System," to SpaceDev for technology related to fine altitude and control systems on a spacecraft.

    Scientists Critique Satellite Protection

    A proposed U.S. system to protect satellites from solar storms or high-altitude nuclear detonations might cause radio communication blackouts. New research suggests if activated, a so-called "radiation belt remediation" system could significantly alter the upper atmosphere, seriously disrupting the world's high frequency radio transmissions and GPS navigation.

      Boeing-built Components Advance International Space Station Assembly

    This month's scheduled Space Shuttle Atlantis STS-115 mission resumes assembly of the International Space Station (ISS) with delivery of the Boeing Port 3/Port 4 (P3/P4) truss segment and two power-producing solar arrays. STS-115 is the first assembly mission since November 2002.
