A Cosmic Rain Lasting 30000 Years

For the last 30,000 years, our planet has been hit by a constant rain of cosmic dust particles. Two scientists from the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) at Columbia University in New York and the Alfred-Wegener-Institut (AWI) for Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven, Germany, have reached this conclusion after investigating the amount of the helium isotope 3He in cosmic dust particles preserved in an Antarctic ice core over the last 30,000 years.

    Opportunity Examines Crater Ejecta And Grinds into Rock

    After traversing the sandy plains of Meridiani to "Beagle Crater," Opportunity investigated a patch of outcrop pavement thought to be representative of the Martian surface beyond the reach of materials excavated by the impacts that dug Beagle and the nearby, much larger Victoria Crater. Opportunity used its rock abrasion tool to grind away the surface of rock for the first time since the rover's 691st sol, or Martian day (Jan. 3, 2006).

    SDL Sensor To Be Installed On ISS

    After more than a three-year wait, Utah State University's Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) will be celebrating as its sensor is installed in the International Space Station during an Extra Vehicle Activity (EVA) on August 3. SDL's Floating Potential Measurement Unit (FPMU) was originally scheduled to ride on the Space Shuttle launch after the Columbia and subsequently was on hold until it was launched on July 4 aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery.
