Up To Six Pieces Of Debris Fell Off Discovery

Discovery's fuel tank "performed very well" during the shuttle's launch Tuesday, shedding small pieces of debris as expected without endangering the astronauts, a top NASA official said. NASA officials were elated about the launch, although television images showed that pieces of debris fell off the shuttle's troublesome external fuel tank minutes after the start of just the second flight since the Columbia accident.

    Eutelsat Communications announced Tuesday its Atlantic Bird 4 satellite has gone into full commercial service at 7 degrees west longitude. Operating since 1998 as Hot Bird 4 from Eutelsat's geostationary neighborhood, the newly branded Atlantic Bird 4 was freed to initiate its new mission at 7 degrees west with the transfer on April 22 of broadcast clients to Hot Bird 7A.
