Opportunity Rover Hits Five-Mile Mark On Mars

After the previous week's successful extraction from Jammerbugt, Opportunity resumed its drive southward on the Meridiani Planum toward Victoria Crater. NASA's Mars rover covered approximately 95 meters (312 feet) last week, and reached the five-mile mark for total odometry. In recent days the rover has conducted targeted remote sensing, including panoramic camera imaging of targets called Jylland and Gorm, and an observation of Gorm with the miniature thermal emission spectrometer.

    NASA Sets Next Shuttle Launch For July 1

    Space shuttle Discovery has been given a "go" for its next launch July 1, Michael Griffin, NASA's administrator, announced Saturday, saying he made the decision despite some reservations by engineers over certain components of the orbiter's external cryogenic fuel tank.

    Russia plans to send up a space exploration capsule to analyse the surface of Mars and collect test samples from one of the red planet's moons in 2009, Russia's space agency said Friday. "The launch of the Phobos-Grunt space capsule is scheduled for October 2009. The expedition will take three years," Roskosmos said in a written statement.
