Mitsubishi Heavy To Invest In Next-Generation Rocket

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. plans to spend a total of 5 billion yen ($44 million) to prepare facilities for manufacturing the next-generation H-IIB domestic rocket, scheduled for launch in fiscal 2008, The Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported Tuesday. The major heavy machinery manufacturer plans to modify and expand its welding facility for the rocket's fuel tanks at its main plant in Aichi Prefecture.

    Shanghai Lands Star Role In Satellite Mission

    Shanghai will be the headquarters of the satellite positioning equipment used to track the country's first lunar orbiter, due to be launched next April, officials said Monday. The lunar orbiter positioning system uses four radio telescopes - in Shanghai, Beijing, Kunming, capital of southwest China's Yunnan Province, and Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in the northwest.

    Swales Aerospace announced Tuesday it has delivered the last of five micro-satellite buses for NASA's Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms mission. THEMIS comprises five identical high-performance satellites flying through Earth's magnetosphere, a region of the upper atmosphere extending for hundreds of thousands of miles. The mission is scheduled to launch in October.
