New Mineral History Shows That Young Mars May Have Supported Life

Mars started out relatively wet and temperate, underwent a major climate shift, and evolved into a cold, dry place strewn with acidic rock - less than ideal conditions for supporting life. "Starting about 3.5 billion years ago, conditions on Mars became increasingly dry and acidic - not a pleasant place for any form of life, even a microbe," said John Mustard, a geologist and a primary author of the Science paper.

    An Atlas V launcher successfully carried the ASTRA 1KR satellite into orbit today, on the third mission of the year for International Launch Services (ILS). The 19-story Atlas V-411 vehicle lifted off today from Cape Canaveral's Launch Complex 41 at 4:27 p.m. EDT (20:47 GMT).

    British scientists said Thursday they have discovered rivers the size of the Thames in London flowing hundreds of miles under the eastern Antarctica ice shelf. The team studied small changes in elevation, as observed by ESA's ERS-2 satellite, in the surface of the oldest, thickest ice in the region, to detect the rivers.
