![]() Titan, the largest moon in the complex Saturn system is a mysterious place. Its atmosphere is rich in organic compounds that are beleived to form the basis of life on our own planet. Organic compounds form when sunlight destroys the methane. If sunlight is continuously destroying methane, how is methane getting into the atmosphere? On Earth today, it is life itself that refreshes the methane supply. Methane is a by-product of the metabolism of many organisms. Could this mean there is life on Titan? |

![]() Boeing will join the Lockheed Martin-General Dynamics team competing for the Mobile User Objective System - a multi-bird system that will improve ground comms for US forces on the move. Selection of the final MUOS design is scheduled for 2004. |
Berkeley To Build Five Bird EO Constellation ![]() NASA has awarded the University of California, Berkeley, a $173 million contract to build and operate a fleet of five satellites to pinpoint the event in Earth's magnetic neighborhood that triggers violent but colorful eruptions in the Northern and Southern lights. The aurora borealis and aurora australis are shimmering light shows that brighten the polar nights, generated by showers of electrons descending along magnetic field lines onto the poles. |
MDA Team Selected for 2007 Mars Scout Study![]() Canada's MD Robotics has been awarded a $150,000 study contract by the Canadian Space Agency for the Canadian contribution to a US-led Phoenix Mars Scout mission. Canada And India Sign Space Cooperation Agreement ![]() The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), reaffirming their pursuit of international space cooperation for peaceful purposes while working towards economic and social development for both countries. |
The Nuclear Heart of Planet Earth![]() What would we find if we were to dig a hole all the way down to the centre of the Earth? According to high school science books we would discover a liquid iron alloy core and a smaller solid inner core at the center. For ten years, geophysicist J. Marvin Herndon has presented increasingly persuasive evidence that at the very centre of the Earth, within the inner core, there exists a five mile in diameter sphere of uranium which acts as a natural nuclear reactor. In this extended interview Wayne Smith talks with Dr Herndon about this theory and its implications for planetary science. |
Sunquakes Reveal The Solar Furnace![]() Most people are familiar with the fact that sensitive instruments known as seismographs can detect earthquakes taking place many hundreds or thousands of miles away. Galactic Wind Of Low-Energy Cosmic Rays Detected In Interstellar Clouds by Bob Sanders - for Berkeley News ![]() A bit of Earth-bound chemistry has led scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, to conclude that there is an unsuspected wind of low-energy cosmic ray particles blowing through the galaxy. Precise Location and Navigation in the Centimetre Range ![]() The importance of position recognition systems for control and monitoring processes is steadily increasing. As dictated by the particular application, very high precision and measuring repetition rate are required for this purpose. |
Yuri's Night 2003![]() For the third time, space enthusiasts around the globe will gather on April 12 to celebrate the anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's flight into space. Major Yuri Gagarin became the world's first space traveler when his spacecraft, Vostok 1, was launched into orbit on April 12, 1961. |
