PlanetiQ, a pioneer in global atmospheric observation, has launched its latest satellite, GNOMES-4. This event occurred aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, lifting off from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California at 10:36 am PT on December 1, 2023. The successful deployment of GNOMES-4 into Low-Earth Orbit represents a leap forward in atmospheric research and weather prediction accuracy.

GNOMES-4 is distinguished by its state-of-the-art sensor, the Pyxis, a proprietary technology of PlanetiQ. This fourth-generation Radio Occultation (RO) sensor is at the forefront of global weather monitoring, offering unparalleled precision in GNSS-RO data. Pyxis's capabilities extend to producing critical weather parameters such as temperature, pressure, and water vapor levels. These measurements are akin to those obtained from weather balloons but with the added advantage of global coverage, crucial for enhancing the initialization of global weather forecasting models.

The Pyxis sensor's design is a testament to the evolution of RO technology. It is more compact, energy-efficient, and has nearly triple the data collection capacity of its predecessors. With the ability to receive signals from all major GNSS constellations - GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and Beidou - Pyxis sets a new benchmark in data collection, offering more than double the data of other leading GPS-RO sensors currently in orbit. Furthermore, Pyxis's capability to probe into the lower layers of the atmosphere, where severe weather forms, is a significant advancement in meteorological science.

PlanetiQ's GNOMES-4, with its high-resolution, precision, and accuracy in profiling the atmosphere's thermodynamic state, stands alone in its ability to provide such detailed observations under all weather conditions and over any type of surface globally. This unique capability makes it a critical tool for both government and commercial entities, including sectors such as airlines, insurance, energy, agriculture, and financial services.

The importance of PlanetiQ's contributions was recognized by NASA in September 2023. The space agency selected PlanetiQ to provide its high-quality GNSS-Radio Occultation data to enhance weather and atmospheric research capabilities. This selection was part of NASA's CSDA Program, which has allocated $476M for commercial data over five years, highlighting the growing reliance on private sector advancements in space-based atmospheric research.

Additionally, in July 2023, PlanetiQ commenced daily deliveries of its superior SNR GNSS-Radio Occultation data to NOAA under NOAA's IDIQ-2 operational Delivery Order-2. This data plays a vital role in NOAA's mission to improve environmental understanding and life-saving weather forecasting.

The collaboration of PlanetiQ with SpaceX for the deployment of GNOMES-4 is a reflection of the increasing synergy between private aerospace and governmental agencies in advancing space-based Earth observation technologies.
