Slovenia floods force VW to curb production
Slovenia floods force VW to curb production

Frankfurt, Germany (AFP) Sept 11, 2023

Auto giant Volkswagen said Monday it had been forced to curb production at several plants in Europe because of a parts shortage after a key supplier was badly affected by last month's flooding in Slovenia.

VW has cut shifts at its flagship Wolfsburg plant in northern Germany, where the Golf and Tiguan models are manufactured. Production has also been trimmed at its Hanover plant, which builds commercial vehicles.

The disruptions will last "at least" a few weeks, a VW group spokesman told AFP.

"This situation is changing from day to day. Other facilities might be also affected in the next weeks."

Volkswagen's Palmela site in Portugal will be closed for "at least the whole of September and October", the spokesman added.

The upheaval comes after severe flooding in Slovenia in August halted production at subcontractor KLS Ljubno, leading to a shortage of crucial engine parts and causing a knock-on effect at the VW group.

Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob described the heavy rains and flooding that hit two-thirds of the Alpine country of two million as its worst natural disaster since independence over three decades ago.

VW's luxury Audi subsidiary said production at its Ingolstadt location in Germany and at a plant near Barcelona in Spain had also been impacted by the Slovenian supply issues.

Volkswagen representatives were currently on site in Slovenia to help the supplier "cope with the destruction", an Audi spokeswoman told AFP.
