Los Angeles CA (SPX) Dec 11, 2024

ST Engineering iDirect, a global leader in satellite communications, has announced a new technology that seamlessly tracks and switches between Geosynchronous Earth orbit (GEO) and Non-Geosynchronous Earth orbit (NGSO) satellites. This cutting-edge innovation is currently undergoing on-orbit satellite testing (OSAT) with a major satellite operator.

This technology introduces a single tracking algorithm that enhances connectivity across challenging environments by enabling smooth transitions between different orbital paths. It represents a significant advancement in multi-orbit connectivity, particularly for industries like aviation and maritime, where consistent and reliable communications in remote areas are crucial.

The system's scalable architecture incorporates an advanced tracking algorithm that ensures precise frequency and timing compensation for satellites across all orbits. It intelligently switches between orbits to deliver optimized service characteristics, enabling rapid and seamless transitions that maintain continuous connectivity for users. Additionally, its dynamic beam mapping technology supports quick network acquisition and dependable beam switching, ensuring uninterrupted service as satellites move through various orbits.

"Achieving seamless connectivity across multiple orbits has been a long-standing goal for the satellite industry, and we are proud to lead this breakthrough," said Sridhar Kuppanna, Senior Vice President of Engineering at ST Engineering iDirect. "Our current validation testing with a leading global operator sets a new standard, providing the flexibility, scalability, and performance needed to meet the demands of tomorrow's connected world."

The multi-orbit tracking and switching capability is already integrated into ST Engineering iDirect's Velocity platform and is set to become available on Intuition, its next-generation cloud-native satellite ground system.
