Pace Delivers Digital TV To British Forces Overseas
Saltaire, England (SPX) Feb 14, 2005 Pace Micro Technology has secured an exclusive order to deliver digital satellite set-top boxes to British military bases and HM Ships at sea, to enable military audiences overseas to receive the British Forces Broadcasting Service (BFBS) digital TV service. The order was awarded by The Services, Sound & Vision Corporation (SSVC), a registered charity set up to entertain and inform Britain's armed forces around the world, including BFBS Radio and Television. As part of the order, Pace's DS420 set-top boxes will be deployed to a range of military bases and suitably-equipped HM Ships in diverse locations, from the Falkland Islands to Norway, Belize to the Gulf and Afghanistan. Using Pace's DS420, many more forces personnel and their families overseas will have access to the full range of BFBS TV and radio channels for the first time. Content includes UK-generated TV programmes providing sports, drama, movies, documentaries, children's programmes and 24 hour news. BFBS radio channels are also available. The satellite broadcasts are uplinked by Inmedia from SSVC's headquarters in Buckinghamshire. The Pace DS420 features a Cryptoworks Conditional Access System (CA) to prevent broadcast material being accessed by unauthorised users. The set-top box is based on Pace's common hardware platform onto which separate cable and satellite front-ends, operator specific software and applications can be added. This approach is highly cost-effective and can accelerate 'time to market'.
