NewSpace 2007 Is About Accelerating Change
Los Angeles CA (SPX) Feb 12, 2007 Continuing its role as the vanguard of the NewSpace movement, the Space Frontier Foundation announced its NewSpace 2007 conference will be in Washington, D.C. this year. Featuring three days of programming and special events, NewSpace 2007 will run from July 19th - 21st at the Doubletree Hotel in Crystal City, Virginia, just two blocks from the Pentagon City Metro stop. The conference, long known for its mix of revolutionary space entrepreneurs, investors, scientists, engineers and space policy leaders, features themed days that focus on the opportunities and challenges of opening the space frontier to human settlement. "For a long time folks in D.C. have seen the Foundation as the rebels in the Hills," said Rick Tumlinson, the Foundation's Founder. "This year we are taking the space revolution to the Hill itself. NewSpace 2007 features a unique mix of space cultures: NewSpace and the frontier movement, the military, government and business leaders, and spiritual and philosophical leaders. They will all contribute to a new conversation about space, with something that should appeal to everyone who shares this incredible dream, be they left, right or center." To this end the Foundation has recruited a new team of young and energetic future space leaders and long time space experts and managers to put together an event whose goal is to build bridges between the NewSpace and Washington cultures. "Developing a close working relationship with the government can be essential to an emerging industry's success and is certainly a tool for accelerating the forces of change. In accordance with the expected growth curve of the NewSpace industry, this is the perfect year to have our conference in the D.C. area to forge new relationships and build upon established partnerships," said conference manager William Watson. Thursday, July 19th will focus on synergies between the needs of the U.S. military and the capabilities of the NewSpace industry to provide low cost, rapid space launch for satellites, payloads and personnel. Discussions will investigate how the innovation and nimbleness of NewSpace can contribute to national security and how the government can develop new ways to work with this unfamiliar community to unleash its potential. Military leaders and planners will work with NewSpace industry executives and leaders to build the bridge to the future both sides need. Friday, July 20th gets down to the "foundation" of NewSpace business and its dealings with the U.S. government. Themes will focus on government means for accelerating this fledgling industry's growth, and how companies can develop the right financing to open a highway to the sky for all Americans and the people of Earth. Sessions include "Financing NewSpace," "Overcoming Impediments to Commercial Space," and "Personal Spaceflight Regulations: Moving Forward," chaired by Patti Smith, FAA Associate Administrator for Commercial Space Transportation. Also, in response to overwhelming requests, the Foundation will host its now annual Space Business Plan competition, where new entrepreneurs will compete in front of investors and analysts for cash prizes and private meetings. Saturday, July 21st the conference goes off planet, focusing on human settlement of the Moon, Mars and beyond. Sessions such as "NASA's Return to the Moon - What Went Wrong?," "Returning to the Moon - A How To Guide" and "Space Settlement and Government" will explore the past present and future of creating a permanent human presence in space. Saturday afternoon features several education sessions that will investigate the vision of youth and reveal updates on our Teachers in Space project. Just as much a gathering of the frontier movement and NewSpace community as it is a conference, NewSpace 2007 is designed to support networking and the all important social activities where most of the real business of space gets done. There will be a dinner and reception Thursday night, our well known "hospitality suite" Friday evening, and a reception and black-tie optional Saturday evening awards banquet. In previous years the Space Frontier Foundation waited until most of the speakers were confirmed before announcing the conference and putting the agenda and registration page online. This year, the Foundation is providing an early look at the preliminary agenda to let the space community know what is coming, and to thank attendees for registering early the organization is providing a discounted early registration rate.
